  • Older Kid Naps

How old were your kids when they gave up naps? DS1 just turned 3, and suddenly his naps have dropped from 2.5 hours down to 1. I'm hoping this is just a phase, and not the beginning of the end.
So, how old were your kids when they stopped napping and how did the transition happen? (Suddenly, gradually, etc.)

DS1 still sleeps 25% of the time, but I have to lie down with him now for "quiet time". (4 1/2)
DS2 is cutting his molars and his naps are wonky. :/

At 3.5, C still naps daily from 1-3.5 hours. Mostly averaging roughly 2 hours. But she does not do well when she doesn't nap. On the weekends when Daddy is home, she will sometimes try to get away with 30 mins but I try to avoid that because she's just overtired the rest of the day.

DD dropped nap between 2.5-3, DS at 2.5 takes a 1hr nap if we're lucky. My kids are amazing nighttime sleepers, but naps are never long and rarely reliable.

We dropped both kids' naps at about 3.5 years old. They'd still nap if we let them, but ten it was taking them hours to fall asleep at night.

DS dropped his nap around 3. I tried to make him keep napping but he was done. Bedtimes got easier. DD just turned 2 a couple months ago and has started to nap only every other day or so. I just try to pay attention to if she is how she is acting. She doesn't want to lay down anymore so it works if we are out and about in the car or stroller at that time and she will fall asleep. On the days she doesn't nap bedtime is much easier. Some days when she naps it will take her an hour or more to fall asleep. I was really sad when DS quit napping because I wanted my break.

Well I was hoping you'd all say your kids are still napping at 4 or 5... but I guess the upside is he might start falling asleep more quickly when nap comes to an end. I guess I'll just be grateful for the 1 hour we're still getting. 😥

We will still enforce quiet time of 1 hour when C stops napping. Mama needs the time.

I wish that would have worked for mine! The stinkers would play quietly and then fall asleep! So... I give them my phone for 30 minutes to an hour if I need to get something done. *shrug*

Between 3.5-4.5 we faced this bargain everyday where DS would either (a) nap for 1-2 hours, be delightful all evening, then find it impossible to fall asleep until 10:30, even when he really did his best to lay still and quiet; or (b) skip nap for "quiet time" and be crabby, miserable, and truly dangerous to himself until easy 8:30 bedtime.

It took until 4.5 before he could really skip nap and still be a functional and happy human at dinner time.

It was not an easy transition. Godspeed.

My dd stopped napping at around 2 yo., and by 2.5 they were definitely gone! You really rely on them to get stuff done, but once you're used to not having that nap, you don't have to rush home for it and they go to bed so early!

                        3. She wasn't falling asleep til midnight otherwise. It can get scary if she is in the car around 6 and falls asleep--grumpytown but otherwise she is fine. She does do "rest time" while BabyJ naps--aka in her room with the Kindle

All three of my kids dropped ALL of their naps by 2 or 2.5. They did sleep 7 to 7 though so I had time at night but they were LONG days.

Wow, reading this makes me realize how much DS sleeps. He takes a 1 to 2 hour nap, then sleeps from 7 to 7. Is there such a thing as sleeping too much? He'll be 2 next month.
I hope your little guy keeps up napping for another while OG.
