Steven is allergic to Peanuts. I took him to the allergist yesterday to check on his mustard allergy (actually I wanted to see if he had "outgrown" it), and since Mac thought he may be allergic to peanuts, we had him tested for this too. (Steven hasn't really had peanuts before, since we were advised not to give him any due to his mustard allergy, but he eats cashews without any problems!) Anyway, turns out he's very allergic to peanuts-- he reacted twice as strongly to the peanuts as the mustard! Last time he was exposed to mustard, within 5 minutes his eyes were swollen shut along with all the other anaphylactic type of symptoms...

Anyway, poor little guy will probably never "outgrow" these allergies, so says Dr Allergist... So it's time for me to get into gear now instead of living in denial like I have been for the past year or so... No peanut butter cookies, no PB&J sandwiches, no deli mustard with a hot pretzel! What a life... The good news is that since he eats cashews without a problem, he can continue to have those! (And they are prepared in peanut oil!) It's all a bit confusing to me how it works, so I have some research to do. I assumed that if you were allergic to peanuts, you were allergic to all of its derivitives, including the oil... Maybe I can make a "cashew butter" so Steven can still enjoy the joys of a modified PB&J...

I know how weird the entire nut allergy thing can be. DD is allergic to Pine nuts but seems to fair well with others. She can eat mussels and crab but not shrimp. We carry the epipen in the car at all times just in case as we never know when she will have a reaction to something.
