Hi! We had our baby (Luke Raymond) on May 22 at 2:55 am . It was an eventful day... That was last Friday. Kate had a birthday party to go to after school- and the party was kind of far from our house, in a nature reserve. I had been feeling "off" all day, in an ominous sort of way... I got her to the birthday party without a problem (except for Friday afternoon metro traffic, thanks very much) and then I drove with the twins down to USUHS to pick up Mac. I started having contractions on the way, but they were relatively weak. When I got there, we decided that I should go to the hospital and Mac would go get Kate then come back to check on my progress. In the hospital it was determined that I was only dilated to 2 cm, 50% effaced, so I could go back home. I have a history of very fast labor, so I was a bit worried by this. The contractions started coming really hard at about 11 pm, and of course we had to scramble to find someone to come watch the kids since we'd been planning to go into labor after my mom got here on Saturday. Anyway, we found another med student and his wife who were able to come to our house, and we went to the hospital where I was checked and admitted at about 2 am. It was total chaos from that point on. Apparently the baby's HR dropped a lot with each contraction, so they wanted to put a fetal scalp monitor in, but the resident had to try about 4 times because it kept falling out , and they broke my water and then decided to flush out the rest of the amniotic fluid with some machine, then they sent Mac downstairs to admit me because I couldn't get an epidural until this paperwork was filled out... Then finally the epidural was ordered and I did my consent, etc., and then I got checked right before the epidural, and I was fully dilated, etc, ready to push. I had felt like the previous hour had been one continuous contraction, but I was so focused on making it to my epidural-- I never even considered that I wouldn't get it. But, I didn't and 3 pushes later out came Luke... Mac was there for the actual delivery, but not much else of the labor. The active labor lasted less than 2 hours, The cord was loosely wrapped around Luke's neck, so that is why the HR dropped, but he wasn't really in any danger and his Apgars were all 9s, so that is good.
Anyway, that's the story! I'll get a pic up when I get my DH to help... I am a wee bit computer/digital camera illiterate. Luke was 19 inches long, 5 lb 9.5 oz. Tiny! But he's so cute and he's so sweet! We were in the hospital for 2 days, sent home, then the next day Luke was readmitted to the NICU for some jaundice. We spent one night with him under the Bili light in the "Family NICU suite", and now his jaundice is much better so it looks like we are all done with hospital stays for now!
The kids are really excited and I am soooo happy to be home, but I am exhausted! Mom is here now helping out, so I can more or less concentrate on the kids, which is really nice! Anyway, that's my labor saga! Sorry so long and probably TMI, but oh well!
