  • Summer Camp/Childcare Before Moving

The kids' school ends on May 22. We'll be in town through June, moving sometime in July, starting the new jobs on August 1. So, I need childcare. The easiest is to do the school's summer camp. The problem is that it starts June 11, and the shortest session is 6 weeks. I can get away with working from home for the 3 weeks before camp starts, but probably not for 6 weeks. So, do I pay $1400/kid (plus before/after care ($8/day/kid), uniforms ($45/kid), and lunch ($175/kid) to enroll them in the 6 week session but only use 3-4 weeks? I had thought it started earlier in June and we'd have at least 4 weeks before we moved, but I just checked the dates and saw that it's later. Any other options I feel like would be more stressful for all of us, but it's sort of a waste of money too. I guess I could ask if it's possible to pay for fewer weeks, but I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

Is there a YMCA session or VBS hopping you could do?

(VBS hopping seems very popular) - I haven’t done this personally, but again, it’s widely done here.

I think YMCA camps don't start until Kindergarten age. Same with VBS, and those aren't all day, I don't think.

I’m in the same boat. And my nanny is pregnant due the first week of June. And I have to find a nanny in our new city.

I’m going to hire a nanny for 1 month basically FT even though I only work PT. That’s the only way I can ensure coverage AND someone to watch these people while I pack this hot mess.

I bet you could easily find a nanny for that one month since it’s summer and college students are around. It might be nice to not have to run them around everywhere but they can still get playground and library time.

I'm sure I could, it'd just be one more thing to add to my growing to-do list. At least with the camp it's something they know and love already.

Yeah I hear you, the 3 weeks of surviving at home with no childcare would turn me off from that. But to each their own!

We did it last summer and it was a lot of fun. We did swimming lessons in the mornings and had playdates and outings. Three weeks tested my limits though, and any longer than that and I think I might lose it. And I didn't actually get much work done, which was fine, as long as I don't do it for the full 6 weeks.

Yeah it would super stress me out because I have time sensitive work to do. I can do a day or two and just survive with TV but there’s an expectation of my availability during the afternoons that it pretty challenging with the kids around.
