  • Shameless brag...

After 15 months of swim lessons and countless swimming practices with mom at both the beach and pool, my son swam by himself in the deep end of the pool for the first time yesterday. Mind you, he swam unaided for maybe 60 seconds at a time, but he did it all on his own. It absolutely blew me away. All at once, I was bursting with pride and sadly nostalgic that he had crossed yet another developmental milestone. He had a look of pure joy when he realized that he was doing it on his own.

Just to give you a mental picture of this event, imagine a scrawny, tow-headed little guy flapping about the deep end like a bird while I, his enormously huge 39 week pregnant mommy donning an oh-so-attractive maternity swimsuit, beamed and teared up at the same time. Clearly, Motherhood has changed my priorities.

When I think about my reaction to all of this, which admittedly is a normal developmental milestone, I can't help but imagine how braggy I would be if he ever accomplished something truly extraordinary. Look out!

Wow, that is fantastic Kelly! We haven't even started swim lessons I'm embarassed to admit, though my girls love being in the water.

That's great!!! Having kids learn to swim early is so important!!!

I too am overwhelmed at times with the joy I experience to see my daughter do something on her own, or for the first time, and watching her face as she she realizes what is happening! ! It's intoxicating!

It's like having a double mocha for no reason at all!!

      Good for him!!!

WAHOOO!!!! That is awesome!! There is absolutely NOTHING like those moments - you brag on!! Those are the times that make the whole motherhood world complete heaven! Take care and good luck with the last few days of pregnancy... (did I mention how jealous I am that you are on the end of it?!)

            Kris,

You crack me up! Yes, we are having a small nudity problem in my house. Several times, I have looked outside the window only to find that my child is playing on the deck buck naked because "he didn't want to get his clothes dirty or wet". 8O This, of course, happened right under a big ol' University of Kentucky flag. Insert panoply of redneck jokes here. I'm sure that the neighbors love us.

Also, one of his cousins taught him to pee in the bushes when he went boating in Tennessee. Let your imagination run wild with stories about this translating to the very urban Twin Cities.

Ah, the highs and lows of parenting.

Now THAT is funny. You must get a picture.

Not long ago, I was in the pool with Bryn when she started stripping off her suit. Why? She didn't want to wear it any more, of course. Our rule is that she has to be dressed when she is in the front yard or when we leave the house. Otherwise it's a free for all. She has the rest of her life to learn body shame, right?

That's great about the swimming. Especially since he is doing that well before the baby and before the end of summer. Your trips to the pool next year will be easier for it.
