  • Has this happened to you?

My son Luke used to (up until about 2 days ago) go to sleep peacefully for every nap in my arms as I rocked him, gave him a pacifier, and sang a couple of lullabies. I would do this for up to 10 minutes, then put him down whether or not he was asleep. He would just start sucking his thumb and go to sleep (he is 5 1/2 months). As of Wednesday, I think, he decided he would have no more of being rocked, he refuses his pacifier, and if I try to sing to him he just pulls my hair and starts sucking on my chin (he's teething). He gets more and more frustrated until I put him down in his crib, at which point he finds his thumb and will whine for maybe 2 minutes and then go to sleep. I should feel ecstatic, since I can literally put him down without having to do "cry it out" or anything, but I just find it odd that he'd change all of a sudden. Now I'm without a "bedtime" routine, and this freaks me out b/c I am about as close to OCD as you can get about routines... without actually being OCD...

Anyway, just wanted to see if any of you have had a similar experience! He's a super easy baby, great sleeper, never been a problem... This isn't a problem, either, just struck me as strange...

I feel like I'm constantly re-inventing the sleep routine and have just recently gotten Mitchell to start taking regular naps again (hallelujah!). I think teething and other developmental changes definitely play a part. Our new thing is to put him in the crib awake with the fisher price aquarium playing, he'll push the button a few times and sucks his thumb until he goes to sleep.
    Awake is the new sleep!

My middle son was this way......he did not want to nurse to sleep or have any kind of cuddling (although he is our cuddliest kid otherwise). When he was ready to go to sleep, that was it, and he wanted to be in his crib. It was kind of sad to me at the time, but really, it was a blessing, especially now that I have lived through his younger brother's babyhood.
