  • Acidopholus? (Ignore poor spelling, please!)

Keelin is on augmentin for yet ANOTHER ear infection. Needless to say, it's doing a number on her GI tract. Anybody ever give the contents of acidopholus capsules once a day to their tot? I have read about its benefits and I called her ped to check....I thought it might help with diarrhea. Just curious if any of you ever used it. Thanks..

My inlaws buy packets of acidophilus that they mix in juice or tea. I would check with your ped, but I dont see anything wrong with it.

You can mix acidolphus powder into milk/formula, too.

We had the same problem with ear infections and antibiotics way back. I fed my daughter yogurt (with live cultures) at least once a day. She eats a lot of yogurt anyway, but after that experience I always made sure to feed it to her every day while on antibiotics.

Sorry to hear she has another ear infection. My older daughter had 4 her first year. It sucks. Each year after that got better and no ear infections in the last 2 years.

My twin daughters had chronic ear infections during their first year and were just miserable. They were on antibiotics on and off for months on end and it really did mess up their GI tract. So, their pediatrician recommended I start giving each girl a snack of active-culture yogurt once a day to help with diarrhea. It worked. After a week or so of that regimen the problems resulting from a lack of "friendly" bacteria in their bodies cleared up.

Another good side effect: To this day they absolutely adore yogurt as a treat (as much as ice cream!).

Geez, it never occured to me to give them yogurt when they are on an antibitoic. I'm going to definitely file that little gem away!

We give 4-5 caplets 2-3 times a day, particularly if she is on a whopper of an antibiotic (like Augmentin). She dependably gets loose stools, thrush, and a yeasty diaper rash EVERY time. The acidophilus helps somewhat. (And Lotrimin AF on the rash....) I recommend the Nature's Bounty brand because it's easy to cut open and squirt into applesauce, yogurt, etc.

We do soy yogurt (allergic to milk) as well, but it's not enough "oomph" for DD.

The organic section of the local grocery store has acidophilus in big bottles in the refrigerated section--don't know if that could be used in the same way, or not.

              HTH!

Marla, I hope little Keelin feels better soon. I visited her fan club the other day - she is such a little darling.

Thanks everybody...she's doing better but has the typical red yeasty rash. Lotrimin does help, though.

Chris....to attach a disclaimer...the other goofy pics on the website are her dad at a conference bragging about his "amenities" in his hotel He was trying to rub in that I was stuck at home with ice and snow and he was in FL! Then he had to post pics of the computer monitor he wanted Clearly somebody had too much time on his hands, but it's good for a laugh. Thanks...yours little guy is adorable, too!
