Sally--The MIL visit may have motivated DH a little, but I don't think he really cares what his mom thinks...plus, she expects him to be messy I think.

      How about Meshack Shadrach?

DH did an ultrasound this morning and we're 95% sure it's a boy! The name my friend didn't like was William and we would probably call him Will for short....but definitely not Willy or Billy. I didn't think William was that bad of a name, but she obviously thought it was offensive! For a middle name we were thinking Edward...which I'm not particularly a fan of at all, but that is DH's middle name as well as his grandfather's, great-uncle's & great-grandfather's so I'm leaving it up to him as to whether or not we carry on the tradition. I'm leaving the middle name up to him because I don't need the MIL to get on my case about me choosing not to carry on the tradition!!

Boy names are just so hard to pick because there just isn't as big of a selection as girl names. And you can't really name them anything cutesy because it just wouldn't sound right when they get to be middle-aged. Also, since I used to work in childcare, there are a lot of names that were just...well....ruined for me. Some of you who are/were teachers probably know what I mean. Let's just say we never had anyone named William attend our center while I worked there so it's sort of a "virgin name".

Boy, I can't wait till all of the parenting advice starts rolling in...... :!

Meshack Shadrach Black? Or you could have Meshack and Shadrach Black!

I *love* the name William. Nothing wrong with it at all.

Actually "William Abednego" has a nice ring to it.
          Congratulations!

ugh...I know the feeling....of course, now that I've had 4, I'm one of those pesky, well-intentioned people. I was trying to convince some poor woman at the pool this week to have her own #4 (I'm sure she's now posting on a forum somewhere about how this nutjob of a mom was prying into her reproductive life ). I tend to give tons of unsolicited advice now too

I guess my own 'filter' is somewhat skewed now! I even shocked my husband a while back...I was talking with a pregnant woman at a Burger King PLay area (very casually) about cervical mucous changes and gas during pregnancy....when we left he said "where do you know her from"...when I told him "I just met her at the play area today" he nearly had a heart attack....

See...we're well intentioned...our filters are just kaput!

My advice? In the true spirit of 'people suk' (myself included) recognize that this is probably more about them wanting to share their experiences about how they named their babies, gave birth, etc...and either smile and nod or ask them about how they named their first baby and let them relive their own pregnancies vicariously through you.

This is just the beginning of a long, long string of listening to how other people know better, unfortunately! The only good news is that someday YOU will know better! :>

                  I think you've picked a great name!

                    Erica,

CONGRATULATIONS! BTW, as others have said, the advice will just keep on coming, here are some of my favorite responses:

-When are you gonna wean that kid? (A: kindergarten).
-Was it planned? (A: by God)
-Are you going to do something about his small size? (A: Like what?)
-Why do you still work? (A: I really abhor spending time with my children)
-Are you done? (A: Nope, we are going at it like rabbits every night.)
-Are you going to let your kid do that? (A: Yup, his probation officer says it's o.k. with his court ordered plan.)

I could go on, but I'm afraid of revealing what a calloused mom I've become. But I also confess to having done the same sort of thing to others.

You're too funny, Kelly! I'm going to have to start taking notes! By the way, I spoke with my friend this weekend and she asked if we had come up with any names yet....uh duh, William! So I told her we were still thinking William. She just said "ohhhhh" and quickly changed the subject!

Jon tells people with every single pregnancy that if it's a girl we're naming her "Bertha" and if it's a boy "Wolfgang". That seems to shut eveyone down pretty quick - I guess out of shock and horror.

(The funny thing is, he's serious about the "Wolfgang" for a boy ).
