  • For Nellie (and other wanting a VW)

    Nellie,

Here are some sites to wet your appetite for the VW Microbus.

I even found some Microbus discussion boards.

    Thanks, Crystal!
I think this would be a great family car. The concept car plan was to have a pretty good engine too. Functional and fun to drive -- I can dream! I'll be first in line at the VW dealership.

Just an FYI - my uncle is the engineering editor for Road & Track magazine and says that VW's downfall is the electrical. As long as that is covered by your warranty, you're good. My cousin had a Jetta and I have a Passat wagon and we both found it to be true. While my cousin was considering buying another VW (after many electrical problems w/her Jetta), she told her dad that VW says they've been working on the electrical. His response: "They've been working on the electrical since 1964."

        But I LOVE my Passat.

Yeah, I've heard that. I wonder how long the warranty coverage will be.

My room-mate from college has been a loyal VW consumer since we graduated. She's killed a Golf and after a royal screw-up from a VW dealer in Baltimore, finally has a new Jetta wagon. The Golf finally died after close to 200,000 hard driving city miles. She's loyal BUT she's also got a mechanic who does nothing but specialize in VWs.

We own a VW...we have loved our VW...but...don't get one. Sorry guys, but the repairs are freaking EXPENSIVE. Even if you have the money, why would you want to spend it on the repairs, you know?

We planned on buying a VW van 8 years ago and were thrilled to finally get one 2 years ago...and that thing has had regular "little" repairs. To top it off, the regular maintenance is outrageously expensive and has to be done at the dealer to maintain the warranty.

We recently spent >$600 on a check-up...thena few weeks later it was $1000 on some freak brake thing and....not even a month later, my Check Engine light is on. We called and they said "It could be the....." and they are all spendy. We're looking at another $1000, I'm sure.

The way we figure it, with the cost of the repairs and the additional maintenance costs of being able to own a VW we could have probably purchased a nice, used mini-van and had it almost paid off.

              I like my VW..and I really, really wanted it....but I wouldn't buy another one.

Just my .02 The repairs are expensive.

yeah, but once you're out of warranty, all repairs are expensive. My parents have had Saabs and Volvos forever and they're not cheap to fix, even with the dude that specializes in their cars. Luckily all the repairs we've needed on the BMW (ok, don't get me started on the worlds most expensive folly that broke down on July 4th. How fun was going to pick him up in 90+ degree heat, with all of our groceries melting in his car, and then having to drive INTO the city as the sun was starting to set. Nuthin' like it...) and my Mini have been under warranty.

I want a Rickshaw and someone to pull me on it.
