baby signs

Does anyone have any recommendations for books/dvds on teaching young babies to sign? At this point, I don't really have a preference as to whether we teach our little guy a modified version of ASL or just made up signs....but I think I am leaning toward the ASL route. This subject fascinates me, but I haven't been able to find any great books on it.

I have no idea, but I just wanted to say I was expecting this topic to be about what to expect from a Scorpio vs. a Libra baby.

I checked one out from the library. Can't remember who it was -- a guy with a mustache? We did some basic signs with both kids and I think it really helps with communication. Have fun!

I thought this thread was going to be about those painted signs people put in their front yards that say "It's a Boy/It's a Girl" when a new baby was born.

I came across one dvd at the library and was thrilled to find out there are six volumes in all. They are really cute, they have great songs and teach really useful signs. DD loves them, and she was able to pick it up really fast. I've watched a few other signing videos, and Signing Time really stands out. I find myself watching as well, its actually pretty entertaining. Plus that way I know what she is trying to sign to me. MIL bought the set for us (the 6 dvds plus two music cds that we play all the time), but I think it was around $100 on ebay. You can buy it at the site above as well, but I think its a bit more expensive. But its definitely worth it, IMO. DD easily knows over 100 signs, and she's not quite two. Its so helpful to know what she wants without a tantrum to find out!

Oh, also, I have Baby Signs. I didn't find it useful. It is written for adults to read and then teach signs to their kids. I didn't even think the info for adults was all that great, it was a lot of filler (IMO). I bought a $50 vhs/book set, and I think its sitting in the basement somewhere. If anyone wants it, I'd be happy to see if I can find it and send it out.

I have baby signs and skimmed it in five minutes. DD signs please and thank you and we are working on more. I started at around 7 months, got nowhere and picked it up a few weeks ago.

We have Baby Signs. We used it with both kids, and were successful, especially with our youngest. Brigham is 2 and still uses a lot of signs with his words- it helps. Signing has saved us from many a tantrum.

Just a chip-in: our speech pathologist specifically recommended Signing Time.....our library happens to own several of the DVDs since it's a whole series. So, that's the word from the "experts".
