  • The bible is full of myths

My almost 11 year old just attempted to have a philisophical debate with me.

"Look, Mom, the bible is just a myth...God..is a myth"

    "WHAT?!"

"Who wrote the bible? MEN...just normal people....not God"

"Andrew, they were inspired by God"

    "Oh, Mom....they were just men"

Well, he does have a point....

It sounds like he's ready to figure out what he believes for himself and he's questioning everything.

Yes! I say that he is on to something. The bible is so rich as myth, so boring as non-fiction.....

Well, I don't necessarily agree that the Bible is all myth. But, I do think that Andrew is doing something normal and not all that bad. You can't really know what you believe if you don't think about it and question it. And, he's got a point that men did write the Bible - inspired men - but imperfect men nonetheless AND it's been translated through the centuries by imperfect men who have made mistakes and removed some content of the original scriptures. Sooo, that's what I meant when I said he had a point.

I do think that is very healthy that he is thinking and questioning the bible. Blindly taking everything you read as gospel is probably about as bad as not reading it at all. I think that is probably about the best age for kids to be in some sort of Sunday School if you are so inclined--they are young enough that they feel bold enough to question what they hear without worrying what other people will think.

I don't believe the Bible is a myth either, but that is something that can take a long time to decide about. I applaud you for raising a son who is not only independently thinking, but is brave enough to talk to you about it!
