  • Discussing Death

    This was actually pretty funny....My nearly 4 YO daughter's fish is sitting at the bottom of her tank, not interested in food, barely moving her gills, head pointed down, generally not looking too lifelike. So I figure this is going to be the big discussion about death and dying, what happens afterwards, emotions, etc.
    Me: I'm afraid your fish is very sick.
    She: Yeah?
    Me: I think she might be dying.
    She: <faint smile> {I figure she's all pent up with sadness at this point}
    Me: Does that make you sad?
    She: No. <smile> Are you sad?
    Me: I'm a little bit sad.
    She: Why?
    Me: Because I like your fish, and I'm sad that she's dying.
    She: Oh.
    Me: Would you like to get another fish someday?
    She: Yeah!! Maybe a rainbow fish! Or a princess fish! Naah, they probably don't have princess fishes. Do you think we can get a princess fish? Or a rainbow fish?

    So there you have it. We've crossed that difficult threshhold, and are now poised to tackle other impossible topics of childhood and adolescence, like drugs and alcohol, dating and sex, and going to the dentist (our first time is next week!)

      well the fish bit the dust. I asked her if she wanted to bury or flush it, and she got such a kick out of flushing the fish down the toilet. Such a sensitive soul
      Though I did deliver a brief eulogy and made sure she said goodbye to the fish.
