  • Update on Reed

We had his bili levels checked yesterday prior to his check-up, as he was looking more yellow to dh. They are about the same. We decided at the check-up to get Reed on a biliblanket, as because we are unsure if his bili levels will slowly creep up, or start to come down. Better be safe than sorry. He looks like a little glow worm. I take him this afternoon to see how much his levels have started to go down. We anticipate Reed will only need to use the blanket for about 3 days.

Other concern- Emma went to a friend's house, and the mom thinks her daughter has chicken pox. The mom called me after Emma was at her house for 2 hours and says "I just changed my dd clothes, and she is covered in blisters, I think she has chicken pox. " Luckily Emma and Brigham are immunized, and because I had the chicken pox as a child Reed is immune for the first month of his life from illness. BUT the incubation period is 14-21 days, at which point the immunity he receives from me will start to wane, and he will be at risk for getting it. We are hoping that Emma didn't carry it home. Keeping our fingers crossed, and our hands washed really well here. The ped joked that because dh is a physician that only wierd scenarios like with the jaundice and now chicken pox only happen to medical families. Makes me want to lock my kids up for the rest of the winter.

Other than that- he looks great. He is nursing well. His birth weight was 7 lbs. 9 oz, discharge weight 7 lbs. 3 oz. At his 3 day check he was at 7 lbs. 2 1/2 oz.

He has started gaining weight- he is at 7 lbs. 6 1/2 oz. He sleeps about 3-4 hours in between feedings at night. Because of the blanket and jaundice he has been more sleepy during the day. I am making sure to wake him every 2 hours to feed.

Emma and Brigham absolutely adore him. Brigham is really starting to warm up to Reed. Last night I was able to get away for a couple of hours to attend a cookie exchange, and dh told me that Brigham snuggled Reed, and said "I have to be really gentle with baby Reed."

I missed this post earlier. I hope Reed's levels have started to go down. Brigham sounds like he is so sweet with him!

The jaundice is gone!!! After being on the blanket for 24 hours straight his levels came back at 16.7, a significant decrease. The ped had us keep Reed on the blanket for another 12 hours, and did a repeat level the following day- came back at 14.

He is now 2 weeks old, and the jaundice seems to be gone. No hint of yellow left, well maybe in his cheeks, but everywhere he is healthy and pink looking. I didn't realize how yellow Reed had gotten until I was looking at photos I took last week of him, and the kid was as yellow as the smilie faces.

Anyway he is better now, and nursing is going well. He slept 6 hours last night, but only because he was in bed with me.

Hey, take 6 hours any way you can! Mine sleep with me the first couple of months, it's the only way I can get adequate Z's to take care of the other kids.
I'm glad to hear the jaundice is cleared up! We went through that with Syd (she was in the NICU anyway, but I hated to walk in and see her with those baby shades on being baked away--it made me really sad).
                Awake is the new sleep!
