Still my biggest failure as a parent, hard to write about.

Hang in there. The fact that you are worring and trying to help him is proof that you are not failing him.

          Peter,

Not a failure as a parent at ALL. Seriously, children do learn to speak at different times/rates, just like with walking and other 'milestones'. What about contacting the speech pathologist? Is that something that you've followed up on?

Andrew was walking at 9 months but wasn't talking until right before Amanda was born (16/17 months?) and then it was to say 'coke' or just one word. Oh and btw...despite walking at 9 months, he later needed a year of physical therapy and has shoe inserts because of poor balance/coordination...He couldn't ride a bike unassisted until he was 7 or 8. Now, at 11, you wouldn't have a clue that he struggled. Amanda didn't talk until she was 2? ... She understood spoken language but I worried constantly. Then suddenly, she was speaking in complete sentences. Literally, Peter, one day she came into my room in the morning, sat on my bed and was babbling 90 miles a minute. I thought I was hearing things! I waited and waited for her to talk, and now..you can't shut her up...she's constantly talking and sassing. Alex seemed to have a 'normal' progresion of language development and Aidan was speaking in german and english from around 12 months.

It just all depends...really...don't blame yourself or your parenting though...and if you are really concerned, talk to your pediatrician.
