  • Baby gates

My parents are being so difficult about putting up babygates in their house - I think my head is going to pop off! We are going to have to live with them until our house in TX sells - and they have a 2 story house w/ a basement and all of the bedrooms are on the second story. So I was talking to my mom about putting up gates at the top and bottom of the stairs - and she's like 'oh, well, we'll just see how Natalie does and see if we really need one.' Umm...WTF!! Sure, let's see if she falls down the stairs. Maybe after she does a few times....we'll put one up!!

So, first I had to convince them that we needed them....then I had to convince them that it couldn't be a pressure gate - like those cheap wooden ones - that it actually had to be bolted into the wall. She is worried about putting holes in the wall, having to repaint the entire wall after it is taken down, putting holes in the banister....blah blah blah! So I searched the internet and found a 'no-hole' mounting system for the banister side of the stairs so that we won't have to holes in the banister. Which, I can understand sort of.....it would be a pain to try to cover those hole up....But holes in the wall! OMG.

Now, it's 'well, is the gate going to be up all of the time....even when she is sleeping or downstairs? we're going to have to open it every time? hmmm.....'.

I am trying to give them the benefit of the doubt.....and realize that things were different when we were kids...but come on!

We haven't even tackled them picking up their knick knacks and candles yet. Please God, give me strength!

    Thanks for letting me vent!

Here's to hoping your house sells super-fast.

I'm sorry she isn't being more understanding. Maybe once she sees your little whirlwind in action, she will realize how important it is.

Ugh, good luck! Maybe if you offer to take care of whatever repair work needs to happen after the fact? We finally put a very secure gate at the top of our stairs after poor little Mitchell took a tumble down the stairs. We have to open and close it every time we go up or down, but honestly we're so used to it it doesn't seem like a hastle at all.

Oh, Wow, have I ever been there. My MIL could NOT for the life of her figure out how to use the gate in our house. The most annoying piece was that she didn't really seem to care to learn....

I agree, bring them with, and install them yourselves!

We have been there. My mom still insists on buying all these ceramic type decorations, and so we just kind of clean up as the kids break them all.... She says she doesn't care, they are there for the kids, etc. I have noticed her trending towards the stuffed animal decorations more lately. Another thing that drives me nuts is the tendency to leave knives out on the counter. Drives me crazy. We always try to childproof as much as we can without seriously damaging the house.

You guys are SO not making me want to have kids - I can TOTALLY see this being an issue with my IL's they just built a new house. It is a ranch with a finished basement. The guest rooms are in the basement and the railing/staircase are NOT child friendly. ARGH!

            What is with parents sometimes?
