  • Cool Way to Travel

As long as you're not one who gets motion sickness.

The boys & I took a train to Chicago (from KC) for a long weekend, and it was GREAT! I'd booked online (coach), and when I called to confirm I found I'd booked the wrong day. The woman on the phone was totally nice, changed it AT NO CHARGE, and suggested upgrading to a "roomette" for the trip there. She said she could do it for about $30 (total ), so I said yes. Once she totaled it, it was actually CHEAPER than coach. My orignial fare was $330 R/T for all 3 of us, and now it was $311 R/T ... but the return would still be coach (same deal not available). So, we had a private (tiny) room, that converted into bunk beds - which the boys thought was a hoot. There's also free juice and coffee throughout the trip, and your meals are included in the dining car. So, we got breakfast and lunch, beverages all day, bottled water, and our own space.

Once we were in Chicago, I was so thrilled with our trip there that I decided I'd call and find out what it would cost to get the roomette again for our trip back. I kept saying "once you've had the roomette, you can't go back". I told myself as long as it was under $100, I was doing it, b/c not having to constantly scold the boys, etc. was worth it to me. When I called, the woman said $99 .. so I said SOLD. Upon our arrival at the train station yesterday, I was told I only owed $44 for the upgrade (okey dokey!), and that I could make myself comfortable in the "Metro Lounge" (the special waiting area for those w/sleeper car tickets). In the "lounge" we had free beverages and snacks, sofas, a place to check our luggage - it was crazy! And remember, our dinner was included as well. I am ALL OVER this train travel thing. Sure - it's slower, but it's so much more comfortable and cheaper. If I'd driven to Chicago I would have spent at least $350 between gas and meals ... not to mention wear and tear on the car and my mental state.

Oh - and on our cart ride TO the train (called Red Hats), we were sitting with Miss Jean Russell of the Hollywood hey-day. Jean and I like the same method of travel.

    This was so great

I LOVE the train. In fact, when we lived in San Antonio, I had a meeting in Dallas and sadly none of my co-workers even knew that you could take a train. So, I sat in relative comfort, had a fab breakfast in the dining car, prepped for the meeting and the rest of them were late because of a huge crash on I-35.

It's awesome on the East Coast, too.

PS- You may want to copy that and send it to your Elected Leaders as they just cut Amtrak funding by 30%. So smart when we're trying to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, huh?

I love trains, too. Just out of curiousity.....how did you fit the two boys and you in the roomette? I thought it was 2 seats?

I've been trying to convince my family to go out west via Amtrack, but all the Family Bedrooms are booked. (They sleep 4.) Also, not everyone with a vote is convinced it's a good plan. Maybe I should show them this post? I hate flying.

I so want to do this! We were talking about taking a train to St. Louis sometime in the next year or so.

the roomette does seat 2, but their bums are tiny and they both fit on one seat. plus, we spent most of our time with the upper bunk down, so the kids could hang out up there.

Amtrak also charges 1/2 price for kids under 12, and they give a AAA discount.

It sounds like a great trip and I'm sure the boys had a ball. We've thought about taking the train a few times, but it usually leaves our small town station around 4:00 AM....waaaaaayyyyyy too early for me. Maybe your post will motivate me to wake up that early!

We pretty much hung out at my friend's house and had nightly ice cream at Scooters. My friend came down with appendicitis in the wee hours of Sunday morning, and ended up having surgery on Sunday. I hung out with my 2 kids + her 1 all day. On Monday her nanny took all 3 kids as their "thank you" to me, so I walked around, got a pedi and visited another friend. I was called back prematurely b/c Jacob was being a terror and hitting / kicking the nanny (which he has only previously done to me - never to anyone else). Turns out he's got some sort of stomach bug, b/c he's thrown up 4 x's since.

You're right - the weather was amazing. We'd planned to hit the zoo & the children's museum, but we'll do it next time.

                Oh - I also made a Trader Joe's run.

That sounds like so much fun! Trader Joe's (by myself) and a pedicure sounds like a nice splurge. Do you have the same suitcase weight limits as air travel? You could really clean up at TJs.

We've had a stomach bug here too. :disappointed: I will take colds, ear infections, fevers, coughs, you name it over that any day.
