  • Baby name trends

I find it interesting about baby name trends--I like looking at the lists online that categorize the most popular baby names by date.

For instance, if a baby now was born with the names that were popular in the late 70's, when I was born, she'd probably be the only one in her class....I'm talking about a baby named Jennifer or Pam or Jessica. I remember having about 5 Jennifers in my class at school.

And I remember in the late 80's when Kaitlyn was super-popular--now it seems it doesn't show up as much.

Which do you prefer--the more trendy, old-fashioned names (Olivia, Isabella, etc.), the celeb-unique names, or the more conventional standbys (Natalie, Clare)?

Natalie and Clare are actually pretty darn popular now. I myself prefer the Edwardian names...stuff from say, 1890 to 1920's, which happen to be in vogue right now.

We didn't agree on names at all so it was a great thing when they handed us his picture and said his name is Nikolai.

I like the Edwardian names as well- somehow my DH has managed to name both of our kids. DD1 is in the top 5 of trendy names, not sure about 2.

I like original names. Devon was original when he was named it. Who knew the name would spread like wild fire. Donathan should stay original though. I really wanted to name him Dorian (his middle name is Gray) but everyone had a FIT!

Reason #2,456 that I will NOT be telling anyone my child's name until they are here and it is on the birth certificate.

I like a mixture of both traditional and trendy. Not sure what we'll end up with though. We recently found out what DH's grandmother's middle name is and really like it. So if we're blessed with a daughter we will most likely use it. It is very traditional, not trendy at all. Her name fell off of the top list in the 70's.

I think I've posted this before, but this shows the popularity of names:

That is really neat... I could waste a ton of time with it.

Alison.... I have a girl's name for you that I like. It's Alison. Is that self-loving? I've always liked it. With one "L" ("because one L does the job" as my mom said when I told her everyone had 2).

I have a confession: I like the name Alistair.
I guess that's a twist on "Alison" in some way.

I have spent a lot of time playing with that Baby Voyager. I tend to like names for girls that can be gender neutral. We have always agreed on a boy name, Chase Alexander. However, it won't be necessary. We have never agreed on a girl's name until after the baby is born. DH likes the name Tyler for this baby. We have gotten a lot of blank stares from people when they hear it. I can't decide what I like.

ETA: I like the name Bryson!
