Your post has really had me thinking, Sally, about where I stand when the kids ride bikes. They are usually in two different places and sometimes I have to listen more than I can watch because I stick closer to Anna. We live on the end of a dead end but have 3 teen/college drivers home for the summer.

The cones work, especially if you make the street impassable without hitting them. I have gotten lax about putting them out because they blow over (we have those yellow triangle shaped signs) or I have to move them for cars. But I'm going to start putting them out again.

I am so sorry, Sally. I am just sick. I can't imagine the guilt his parents must feel. And what the heck was he doing out so late on the night you saw him? We live towards the end of a cul de sac, too, but it's a hilly street. Most of our neighbors are very cautious except for a couple that lives a few houses down. The husband just got a Harley and barrels down the street on it. He has two young girls so you would think he would be especially cautious. I'll definitely think about putting out cones when Andrew gets older. I have seen that big, neon yellow plastic "man" with the flags...kind of an eyesore, but it would probably get people to slow down.

I hope your son is doing ok, Sally. Such a terrible loss.

If anyone gives you a hard time about the 'eyesore' ... it's less of an eyesore than the child's blood on the street.

        I'm buying those cones TODAY.
