  • Another sitter question

We have a new sitter for ds. Since she lives about a 20 minute drive from us, I was wondering if we should pay her for her travel time. She'll be watching him one evening this week for only about 2 hours and I feel bad that she has to drive so far for such a short amount of time (even though I'm sure she doesn't mind.) She's in college and we'll be paying $10/hr. That is on the higher end for this area, but she mostly babysits for other doctors, so who knows....maybe that's on the low end??

Do you think we should pay her extra to cover travel time?

Pay for a meal or snacks but don't pay for travel time. It will become expected if you start now. 20 minutes isn't that far.

I usually pay sitters who can drive a little more per hour for the time they are here.

I think $10/hour for a college sitter is fair and that you don't need to pay for her commute time.

Thanks for the advice. I'm so new to this sitter thing and am always afraid of appearing to be a cheapskate.

I know! And once you have someone good you'll do about anything to keep them. I think the $10/hr is fair and she will be happy with it. Maybe some good babysitter snacks.

mental note: do NOT take Stella's offers of free sitting.

:~ I guess that's a good way to guarantee that the sitter will give us first priority over other families. :!

I always paid more for the sitters who drove, they used their car and gas, and I saved alot of my precious by not having to drive them, let alone wake up kids to put in the car to drive them home!!!!! A benefit well worth the extra $$.
