we have never gone out tricker treating w/our babes. we have let them dress up at home, taken pictures..and the neighbor gives them a little something. have i ruined them for life?
ds, my little preschool boy has figured out what halloween is all about. he came home talking about it yesterday..i said, 'you dont know what H is"

he said, "yes i do..it's where you dress up, carry a basket and get candy" STINKER!!!

so, what can my babes be for halloween this year. there is no way to keep it from them now. we only have one neighbor..so dh and i have decided to take them to the mall for trick or treating. so, they dont have to wear snowsuits under their costumes or anything...like dh and i did growing up.

    cheap feels..er..i mean ideas welcome.

My daughter has to be a princess every year so long as I am picking. DS gets to be whatever he wants within reason. You can spend a lot or a little on costumes. I get mine on eBay. You can get them at Wal-mart for pretty cheap.

I am going to be a muggle. I'm stealing Kelly's idea, and I am going to go get a t-shirt and some iron on transfer print paper, and I am going to make me a muggle t-shirt.

sylvia - I'll look around. I might have an incredible hulk or home-made batman costume I could send you.

My dudes are going as Boba Fett and Obi Wan. Davita refuses to dress Ai-Lan up as Yoda, so I'm mad.

Sorry for ya!! No way man!! I have to ride the fairy princess foo foo la la parade as long as I can because I have no doubts that in a couple of years she'll want to something like Yoda or Aragorn. Boo. I thought we agreed the dog was going to be Yoda.

I'm just kidding. I just think Bruce is too big to be Yoda. And he's not good enough on a leash to trick-or-treat. I still have to talk to Bernie to see if Nathan can be Yoda. Or I could get Suzanne to have Sean or Mitch be Yoda. Probably Sean - Mitch has too many opinions.

I know. We can always get a stuffed Yoda and drag it around on a leash.

Haven't thoguht about it. Crunchy School has their "Circle Fest" Autumnal Holiday Celebration which involves story tellers and a pumpkin patch, etc. I swear, he's going to be going to "learn how to protest effectively" classes soon. (he's already got the drop to the ground to avoid being picked up thing down pat, which will come in handy when he's going to get arrested for marching on Federal lands)

Last year he was a train engineer. We will have to see.

Kenny's going to be a doctor. I ordered his costume from Lillian Vernon. Not sure about my girls -- Ella wanys to be Sharpay from HSM but I'm too cheap to spend that much.

I've convinced DD that she wants to be a care bear. I found a link with directions to make your own costume using a sweat suit and felt but ended up just buying one from Target.com for 20 bucks.

DS found an $80 Boba Fett costume in one of those kid catalogue that comes everyday. Do people REALLY spend this kind of cash for costumes for their kids?

Ummmm, I DON'T THINK SO!!! I purchased a storm trooper costume for him last year that he can reuse plus we have a bin of make believe clothes. Last year DD wore a hand-me-down Elmo so it is her turn to pick out a costume. I'm trying to only purchase one costume a year. The good news is that my kids do wear their costumes for imaginative play all year long.

                              Re: halloween

Last year I got a couple of costumes at Costco- they were really late in the game, like the week of Halloween, and were leftovers. I got a Tigger, a Cinderella size huge, and a pirate set. So I think I'll have the kids wear those this year.

I usually try to make something simple- last year I made capes and dresses for the girls- the capes can be used again. I got a cheap Lightning McQueen costume for Steven from Lillian Vernon. One year Kate was a gypsy, which was really easy esp if you have mardi gras necklaces laying around. I just got a piece of fabric for a head scarf and she used a colorful big skirt that I had from when I was a hippie-kid (sort of).

To get over the unpredictable weather, we try to stay indoor as much as possible too. We found that churches have lots of "autumn parties" where the kids can wear costumes (beware of mall trick-or-treating b/c they tend to run out of treats FAST which can lead to disappointed kids). We are going to "Boo at the Zoo" this year (it's outdoor- but we'll just bring out the capes), and also to a church thing, and probably some standard trick-r-treating in the 'hood.

If you want a really cheap girl costume, you can always wear some red dress and then a headband with devil horns. That is what our neighbor girl did, and she showed up at our house on Halloween and asked us to take her trick-r-treating. Her parents were busy having a knock-down brawl.
