Anyone have the Super Baby Food (Ruth Yoder?) book handy? Can you give me the fast version of the baby gruel recipe? I mostly need the grain to water ratio. Kittenbritches would prefer some more texture.

Re: baby porridge
Nellie,
do you mean the super porridge recipe? I have the book right here, but I'm not seeing a baby gruel recipe. If it's the Super Porridge, there is a recipe for making it from cooked grains or making it from dry uncooked grains. I can provide either or both!
But if TenE wants more texture, the book says that the way to increase texture in Super Porridge for an older baby is to cook grains completely, then grind less in food processor, and use less additional liquid. Depending on the type of grain you're using, the water/grain ratio varies.Married to pediatric surgery fellow, SAHM to 2 munchkins

Super Porridge:
Cook grains (according to table below) in proper amount of liquid. Mix cooked grains with additional liquid and grind until reaching desired texture. For increased texture and chunkiness, add less liquid and grind for less time.
Below is for one cup of dry grain, amount of liquid required, and simmering time:
amaranth - 2 cups, 25 min
barley, pearled - 2 3/4 cups, 40-45 min
brown rice - 2 cups, 45 min
buckwheat groats - 2 cups, 15-20 min
bulgur - 2 cups, 15-20 min
couscous - 1 3/4 cups, 4 min
kamut - 2 cups, 50 min
millet - 3 cups, 45 min
oatmeal/rolled oats - 2 cups, 15 min
oats, whole - 3 cups, 45-60 min
quinoa - 2 cups, 15-20 min
rye berries -4 cups, 60 min
sorghum - 3 cups, 45 min
teff - 3 cups, 15 min
triticale - 4 cups, 60 min
wheat, cracked - 2 cups, 25 min
Hope that helps, Nellie! Now I'm off to catch up on posts.Married to pediatric surgery fellow, SAHM to 2 munchkins
