  • I want to nip a few things in the bud!

Now that DS is toilet train I want to nip a few other things in the bud that he should have gotten rid about a year ago.

ds (3.5) still drinks from a sippy cup or at best from a straw in a cup or glass. Any way to encourage him to drink from a cup or glass, more so a cup as anytime I've tried with a glass he bites it.

Up until a few months agohe wasn't feeding himself, hates, hates, hates getting messy, anyway do most things, he's great with a fork and knife and finger food, just not with anything that needs a spoon, ie the messy foods, like yogurt or his breakfast, anyone any encouraging tips?

And finally. how do you move on from the potty? He's terrified of the toilet, tried a toilet seat but is scared of that too, no problems peeing into the toilet (well you know what 3 year old boy aim is like especially when daddy decides to destract him mid flow!) its the sitting on the toilet he doesn't want to do. Should I address it or is this something he'll just eventually do in his own time?

    Thank you in advance,
    Nuerotic mother!

For what it is worth....keeping in mind that the more children I have, the LESS I know about parenting....

I think I'd let the sippy cup/straw thing go. I don't see it as an issue to change. He will progress as he is comfortable. If not, his wife will just have to put his coffee in his sippy cup :>

The self-feeding? Offer as many finger foods that aren't messy as possible. Aidan is exactly the same way right now at almost 4. Try getting gogurts and freezing them.

For the potty thing, I'd try to keep using the potty on the floor until he's ready. It's never a good idea to force potty issues....It sounds like he's potty trained and is just fearful of the big toilet. I remember Andrew (now 121/2) being really afraid at that age as well. We used the portable potty for him and did plenty of modeling.....and we also made a big deal about flushing his deposits down the toilet together while singing the potty song and doing the potty dance.

Toilet stuff has to be fun or it just turns into a battle of the wills. Ultimately, using the big potty will have to be his idea because it is so cool and fun to do so.

Anyway...now that I have offered you this advice, Zoe will be taking a sippy cup with her to college, won't eat any foods that are messy and will never get potty trained. I am aware of the karma god's and their plans for me.

IMHO, the sippy cup will solve itself because DS will not want to drink in a sippy in front of his big boy friends. This happened in our neighborhood. When one of the boys drank out of the big boy glass, they all did.

RE: moving from potty to toilet. I'm so right there with you. We have to carry a potty around in our car because DD refuses to go on the big potty. Of course, I brought on all of this potty training angst because I used to offer a TON of advice based on my experience with DS's successful three day potty training boot camp. He had *maybe* two accidents after that weekend we trained him. I felt all confident about potty training and couldn't understand what the BFD was with potty training.

Yeah, I pretty much SUCK! DD has shown me that ...ah...other tactics may be necessary for other kids.

        Oh, I'm killing myself here.

Phew, great to hear I'm not alone! Only reason I was trying to progress with the sippy cup was because school provides there snavks and they all drink from a glass, ds won't touch it then drinks a lot when he gets home to make up for it. I'm sure one day he'll stop staring at the glass in school and just pick it up and drink from it.

Gosh, can you picture your MIL's handing you a sippy cup for you other half!!! :>

I somehow made it through all of this with my daughters and survived. The boy is only 6 months and the thought of potty training scares the crap out of me. Can I send him to one of you more experienced boy moms when the time comes? The girls are already going to need therapy. I can't imagine what I'll do to the boy. He'll probably have to be committed.
