Re: Going from two to THREE

I'll google it, but what's BPA?

We've been using the same sippy cups for ages. I guess they are loaded with this stuff... It must cause sassiness, right? Sibling rivalry? Laziness? Lack of desire to hold hands in parking lots??? These are my main issues.

Cassy, that's just it - how do you go about getting the "right" answers? There aren't any, its all about who you ask. My nephew is 12, the bottles he used as a baby had bpa, he's a perfectly normal 12 year old. Its not just the BPA its everything, society uses the slightest issue to raise parents red flags b/c they'll do anything for their kids. Give me a break, how are you supposed to find time to sift through all this crap?

Anyway, sorry for the hijack Flynn, I'm sure you've made good choices for your little one.

No biggie! I'm getting a kick out of reading the discussion!!!!

I think we'll do our best to get BPA free stuff in a reasonable manner.
I'll do some more research prior to baby #3 coming into the world and if I find anything helpful or compelling, I'll start a new thread in parenting!

I'm just catching up on this thread. But someone asked where you go to get reliable info, and I wanted to jump in with my 2 cents. I go to http://www.pubmed.gov - an index of all articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. You can still find opposing views there, but at least they've had to do reasonable enough research to pass a peer review. You can also see how big their studies were and what methods they used. (Adding - you usually can just see the abstract, not the full article.) It's a little tedious looking through it, and you might not get a lot of info on the latest craze, b/c studies take time. But you can get bits & pieces of reliable info, like:

This study showed that the dietary exposure to BPA from actual uses of PC milk bottles is unlikely to pose a health risk in infants.
          and...
Twenty-four brands of plastic baby feeding bottles were purchased and all were found to be made of polycarbonate... Sterilization was by alkaline hypochlorite, steam, or washing in an automatic dishwasher at 65 degrees C with detergent. [After] A total of 20 cycles... Bisphenol A migration was in all cases not detectable in infant feed using a very sensitive method of liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection with a 0.03 mg/kg detection limit.
There are more, and there might be some with opposing results, but that's a start (from a search of "BPA, infant").

Anyway - I know BPA is a big deal, and I tend toward "all-natural" when I can. But I hate it when people get worried (like that SIDS is caused by a fungus that grows in flame-retardant mattresses) and don't know where to look for info.

I'd say if you have a handful of comparable options and a few of them don't have something that studies are showing may be harmful, why not take advantage of those options? You're not contributing to mass hysteria.
Don't get me wrong - I'm for eliminating unnecessary toxins, too, to the point where we'd probably qualify as granolas. I'm mostly just saying that you can look for info on pubmed, and you probably could find BPA studies there that suggest risks from long-term exposure. That was not intended to be a comprehensive search - sorry! And it does disturb me to read in the National Toxicology Program report that low-dose exposure in rats leads to cancers, etc.
