  • Crib scaling...

We have a crib climber. DD#3 climbed out of her crib today. I am hoping it was a fluke. I thought she was sleeping, I heard a thud which i then thought was her music box which she sometimes knocks off the side of her bed. Next thing I know, she walks out of her room. Not only can she get out of her bed, she can open doors. We have lever door knobs.

I was planning about another year in the crib! 18 months is too early for me! I took off her bumper pad in hopes that would deter any ladder effect. She wouldn't go to sleep tonight, she kept saying blanket and point at her siderails. She's growing up too fast.

Ever since I read an anecdote about an 18 month old who climbed out of the crib and fell, suffering permanent brain damage, I've been convinced that I will convert Eddy's crib to a toddler bed as soon as he shows signs of wanting to climb. But I feel your pain, I REALLY hope it isn't soon! Hopefully without the bumper (which I think is a known climbing aid ) your little one will stay put.

I know! We took it out a lot sooner for out other kids. That is probably why they never climbed out!

We were moving when DS climbed out and couldn't get a bed and make the transition (the timing was horrible) -- so we bought one of those crib tent things. It was about 80 dollars and we got it at The Right Start.

It worked great. We told DS he was camping and he thought it was neat.
DS started climbing out at 19 months.

I'm short on time now but PM me if you want more details. I'd be happy to give them to you!

See, this is partly why we didn't do bumper pads in DS's crib. I can't imagine. Jack is now almost 2.5yo and still (to my knowledge! ) has not tried climbing out of his crib.

I've nothing else to offer you, I was going to suggest one of those crib tent thingies that Flynn mentioned.

Yikes! I'm glad she's ok, Phoebe. I can't believe she is already 18 months old!

It was not a fluke. Happened again today at naptime when DH was on watch. Thanks for the offer of the dome, Flynn. I am getting one tomorrow. I can't take my chances. I really don't even know what they are. I hope Babies R Us carries them because Target does not.

Jenn - if all else fails, my friends' mom tied a volleyball net over his crib when he was a baby. Mid 70's version of the baby tent???

Do you have a guest room mattress you could put on the floor by her crib?

but it doesn't help that you have to order and have it shipped if you needed something yesterday...

We have the same issue. I think we may need to invest in a baby tent too. I have had to sit in her room with her and repeatedly lay her back down until she falls asleep....When she wakes during the middle of the night, I bring her to our room so that she doesn't climb out in the morning.

                        Re: Crib scaling...

DS never tried climbing out, but at 18 mos (right after starting daycare) he refused to sleep in his crib. On the 2nd or 3rd night of hours of screaming from my previously fabulous sleeper, I sucked it up and put his crib mattress on the floor.

He was asleep with a few minutes.

The next night, with the mattress on the floor, he went down with no issues at all.

The day after that, the crib was disassembled and shortly thereafter we started looking for a big-boy bed.

                        Good luck!
