  • Sick Kids etiquette

So someone obviously came to Adele's party last Saturday with a cold and Adele ended up with it. She's had a very runny nose since Tuesday but no other symptoms and we just figured it was a teething symptom since we're just sure she's getting a tooth anyday.

Well that was until DH got sick yesterday and I got sick early this morning. DH had a fever and REALLY bad congestion, I've had the congestion but no fever.

    So two questions.
    1) Is there a way to make sure we don't pass this around and around and around? Adele's nose is still very runny.
    2) How do I keep from giving it to other people's kids? Tuesday we went to our park group, Wednesday she was in child care while I was at bible study, she's also been in childcare at the gym several times while I've worked out and yesterday we had a playdate at a friends house where she proceeded to put all of her toys in her mouth.

I don't want to be "that mom" that takes her sick kid everywhere but how do I know when she's sick and when its something else?

I don't think there is a reliable way to "know" they are sick....and that's one reason all the crap gets passed around. I think it's just part of growing up - getting the germs and getting over them and passing it to the next one. At least that's my opinion.

Honestly - they will get sick, either when they are little or when they are in school. The first 2 winters in daycare just about broke me because C was sick all the time. This last year, he had the sniffles and a cough but wasn't feeling too bad so he went to school.

She's just so mellow we had no idea she was even sick.

You won't know until you get it. Seriously, that's how all of the crap gets passed around. just wait until her first year in a school or daycare setting. You and your husband will never be as sick again. That's the good news. (and I guess I better warn Julia/Oceanchild and all of the other M4 peds applicants about the OTHER down side of the peds intern year...)

I think it's one of those things you can't really control..Alot of times they will already have picked up something and are contagious and you won't even know it yet. If I'm sure DD is sick, I will usually keep her out of the church nursery and cancel a playdate...that is to keep other kids from getting her illness and so she can stay home and rest if she is feeling bad.

I've tried to be extra cautious lately because my DD has gotten 4 stomach viruses in the last 3 months and we are SO tired of vomit and nasty poop in our household! Not much I can do though, other than keep an eye out for her typical symptoms and behaviors. Maybe it's easier to tell as they get older?

I think sometimes a cold hits people differently...it's possible that you and your husband feel worse than she does. (Just my opinion- I have no medical knowledge).

I try not to be "one of those moms". Some kids are just prone to runny noses and may have one for a month. Kids are going to be exposed to germs no matter where you go. If you look in DH's direction when you have a sniffle he is going to get it. My rule of thumb after three kids is a fever or a bad runny/stuffy nose and/or a cough keeps them home. I am dilligent about washing hands and wiping noses.

My kids have never gotten sick very often. I keep them home if I think they are, but I am not hypervigilant about anything. Also, as a SAHM, my kids aren't exposed to a lot of other sick kids. Well, when Ryan hit elementary school, all bets were off.

I am not a germaphobe, and I don't spray everything with germicides. I pretty much let their immune systems take care of things. I hate it when I get it though. They really can handle it better and are so much tougher than I am!

Thanks guys, she really is handling it much better then DH and I. I think I need to do a better job of washing her hands or using that antibacterial stuff after she's been around other kids like at the gym's kid care.

Our gym has kids use purelle (or equivalent) as they enter and leave kid's club. Parents who have been there long enough to remember before they did this say it has made a huge difference in their kids getting sick. Might be worth mentioning to the gym day-care.

i used to be a freak about sick kids.

i got over it with the more kids i had.

being a SAHM family i noticed that when we did get sick, we got REALLY sick.

when ds started preschool last fall...UG! it was bad. we were sick for months. suzy had the same experince, if i remember. i'm gearing up for dd going to preschool, and ds starting K. it's a whole new world of germs!!

im sorry that adele and the two of you got sick! hang in there...and watch for the ears. that's the worst...when babies have ear infections. (screaming when laying down, pulling at ears, fever, unhappy, red looking ears)

hugs!! it's hard when they're sick! and when you are too!

Yep...the down side of soo many little ones, close in age , is that when the sickness begins it never seems to stop!!!

                          Re: Sick Kids etiquette

I hesitated to post a reply to this b/c we're an unusual case. For DS, a simple cold is a big deal, so we have to take extra measures not to expose him to sick kids.

DS was hospitalized with RSV at 8 months old, and ever since then, he catches a cold EVERY time he goes to a nursery. And every time except once, he's had to go to an ER or peds clinic for emergency breathing treatments, even though we give him albuterol treatments at home. (Respiratory rate shoots up to 80+.)

DD has had maybe three colds - fairly normal.

Because of DS, though, if I know my kids are sick (and sometimes it's hard to tell the first day or two), I try not to take them anywhere where there might be infants or kids with immune problems.

When DH & I moved here, we decided we'd start trying to attend church regularly. The first Sunday, DS caught a cold in the nursery. So the next Sunday, we really wanted to keep up our church-going habit. Since DS had a cold, I decided I'd just hold him during the service and hope he didn't spread it. (I mean, normal people aren't so finicky about not spreading colds...) Wouldn't you know it - a little girl with a trach tube came and sat directly behind us. Poetic justice. I don't even know if or how much a cold would mess with a trach tube, but once DS started hacking a couple times, I took him out of the service.

I hope she feels better soon. Sick kids suck! I don't take my kids around other kids when they are "sick." To me my definition of sick is that they clearly look out of it and/or vomiting/diarrhea and/or have a fever. If I kept my kids home every time one them just has a runny nose, I'd never go anywhere. Obviously I wouldn't bring them around a newborn, but I wouldn't bring my kids around a newborn even when they were healthy. That's just my thing. My kids are rarely ever "sick." And when they are it usually runs it's course fairly quickly.

                              This fits us too.

Fevers, diarrhea, vomiting, malaise will keep us at home though.
