  • Carcinogenic baby wash??

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01426.html

More than half the baby shampoo, lotion and other infant care products analyzed by a health advocacy group were found to contain trace amounts of two chemicals that are believed to cause cancer, the organization said yesterday.

Some of the biggest names on the market, including Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo and Baby Magic lotion, tested positive for 1, 4-dioxane or formaldehyde, or both, the nonprofit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics reported.
After all the BPA jazz....and everything else....I'm running out of energy to care. Daegan's shampoo was on the list (Suave Kids 2-in-1 Watermellon.....ok we use the 3 in 1 in Apple scent and Apple conditioner...but the ingredients are similar).

Here's the list of products they tested:

Let's also consider what "trace amounts" might mean...there are trace amounts of all kinds of toxins in our everyday lives. If we were to clean everything up to non-detect levels, we'd be spending obscene amounts of money to make things absolutely safe. generally the EPA considers 1 death in a million an "acceptable risk", but even that is flexible (e.g. radon "acceptable levels" of 4 picocuries per liter result in much more than that, but to clean up to lower levels in all houses would be unreasonable).
should we remove all traces of aflatoxin from the environment? or just bleach the whole $*(#&^$ neighbourhood?
OK, sorry, I'll step off the soapbox now.

Yep, this is where I fall. Seriously even the BPA was over the top IMO. It's amazing that we all grew up healthy isn't it.

I am trying not to read too much into this. It gets tiresome after hearing all the warnings. I assume there would have to be quite a bit of consumption/constant usage in order for real issues to arise. I feel like I came out ok and the regs were a lot less stringent back in the day.

Yet one more reason that we just use dish soap. Cheaper and easy to reach from the sink...

I try not to use this justification - after all, lots of things have improved since "my day" - I am certainly happy that my children aren't exposed to leaded gas, mercury thermometers, etc....I always wonder what kind of neurological weirdness I'm manifesting from my days playing with mercury.
My math teacher in grade school used to tell us that while her mom was shopping, she'd go to the shoe store and play with the x-ray machine. She subsequently died of cancer. I tell my students how I used to play with mercury. I wonder what this generation will be telling their kids - "we used microwave ovens without even wearing lead shields" or "we had power lines running through our BACKYARDS!!"

But aren't cancer rates rising (I have nothing to back that up and am too lazy to search for stats)? I'm sure that diagnosis rates play into it, but it seems like there are so many more cases these days -- and you have to wonder where that comes from.

It's all suspect to me. I have a theory that PAM (non-stick cooking spray) is a root cause of the uptick in cancers (yes, I'm insane).

I'm just trying to use more natural products with as few additives as possible -- in all walks of life - not just with the kiddos.

I think different cancers have fallen and risen in different cultures. I'll bet that electromagnetic radiation will be proven to have something to do with something. I can't imagine that all these cellphone and wifi waves are flying all over the place and not having any effect.

In the end we have to decide what we are willing to live with and without. A lot of the luxuries that we now have come with some consequences. As a new mother, I do what I can naturally for DS but realize that I can't stress about every little thing....otherwise we would move to the country and live off the land!
Thanks Jenn...now you have me worried about PAM

Oooooh - please don't use me to validate such things. I only wrote it to show how mentally whacked I am. :| I don't think I'm a good example ....
