I'm getting pretty sick of the songs I sing to Oscar and I burn through them pretty fast. Right now all I've got is: itsy bitsy spider, row row row your boat, twinkle twinkle little star, i'm a little tea pot, and abc. As well, sometimes I'll throw in a few rhymns like Pease Porrige or Hey Diddle Diddle.

I need more songs. What songs do you sing to your baby/toddler?

Head shoulders knees and toes (http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/has)
    I'm a little teapot
The Grand Old Duke of York
    Boom boom boom your feet
    Pop goes the weasel

I love that these all have motions to go along with the singing. I'll try to think of more.

My dad used to sing two songs to me (my mom singing probably would have resulted in early hearing damage):

      The Ipana Toothpaste song

A totally made up song that went something like this:
"La La La, Eat the Banana, eat 'em everyday, oh yea!"

Recently I heard the "Mares Eat Oats" song, too - which is a catchy little number!

I also like the green alligator song

Try Annie Lennox. My kid is obsessed.

He sings along to all of her songs now. Takes a great deal of stress off me since she sings WAY better than I do.

          Somewhere Over the Rainbow
          Wheels on the Bus
B-I-N-G-O (which is M-O-X-I-E in this house)
          You Are My Sunshine
          Hush Little Baby
          Little Bunny Fu Fu
Baby Mine (from Dumbo - my favorite)
          If I Had a Hammer
          Puff the Magic Dragon
How much is that Doggie in the Window?
          Nick Nack Paddy Wack
Take Me Out to the Ball Game
A Peanut Sat on a Rail Road Track (we thought this was hilarious when we were kids)
          Bear Went Over the Mountain
          My Favorite Things
          Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
          Hokey Pokey
If You're Happy and You Know It
          Ring Around the Rosie
          London Bridge
          Oh Susana
          Rock-a-Bye-Baby

Some of these may be "mature" for an infant but he'll grow into them. He'll just appreciate the sound of your voice.

There was some song about eating worms that my kid brother adored. We have about 2 dozen home movies of him singing "Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat worms. . .

folk songs and oldies work well too . . . think Peter Paul & Mary, early Beatles, Motown. . . Basically, anything PG.

Also, college fight songs -- "Do you Wanna Be a Badger?"

I just sing what I sing -- not kid songs. There is an old Target jingle (for Club Wed) that Jacob loved, and I sing that all the time.

"I love to be with you! I love you, love you, love you, love you, I do ..."

Don't limit yourself to kid songs or you'll want to pound your head into a wall.

download some songs from Laurie Berkner. She saved my sanity when I was trying to entertain #3 and was sick to death of every kids' song I ever knew.

My mom always sang "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog" to us...

"All The Pretty Little Horses" was also a favorite.

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions. I know some of those I had totally forgotten but knew well at some point. Others I'm going to look up. Oscar really likes Simon & Garfunkle as well as old David Bowie so sometimes we'll get into those.

                    Baby beluga!

Also, singing songs in foreign languages can supposedly help kids improve their skills in those languages faster. My mother always used to do that with me and as an adult I'm now fluent in three languages and can make myself understood in a few more.

Check out the "Trout Fishing In America" CDs. I love "My Hair Had a Party Last Night", "Boiled Okra and Spinach" and "Mine". Go to Amazon.com and listen to some of the song clips!

Love Trout Fishing in America. Also love They Might Be Giants. Everything But The Girl has an acoustic album that is very sing-able -- it's cover versions of a lot of classics.

There was a hole....in the middle of the ground... the prettiest hole....that you ever did see.....and the green grass grows all around all around.....

I got a LOT of mileage out of that baby in the toddler years. I even made up my own versions to suit the scenery.

This is a great thread. I mostly make things up as I go along or just sing the same 2 lines of the nursery rhymes that I know.

Bobs and Lolo make really neat kids CD's, we got one for DS's birthday.
