  • Cloth diaper while traveling?

We're going to be traveling back to PA in a few weeks for a visit. I'm so psyched; this is going to be the first time most of the family will get to meet Nate!

I'm trying to decide if I should use CD while away or if I would be better off switching to disposables. My main concern is that my mom uses lots of additives in her washing machine and dryer, like fabric softener, dryer sheets, and the like, and I'm afraid her machines might have some gunk built up that could deposit on my dipes. I really don't want to have to come home and strip everything! For what it's worth, I use prefolds, so everything is 100% natural cotton, which, from what I understand, *should* be more resistant to build-up than synthetics, right?

WDYT? CD or sposies while traveling?

I don't think your concerns about buildup should matter - do an extra rinse at the end and you should be fine. I used to take my cd along when travelling. Now I'm just too tired - anytime we go out, it's disposables. More power to you, though.

Our diaper service just pulled out of our area, btw, so I've been washing for the past month or so. It's not nearly as bad as I'd imagined. I'm even enjoying having complete control over the situation, rather than always worrying about whether they'd show up or not.

I'm actually looking forward to showing off my CD to everyone. I'm way more into diapers than I should be! LOL (And I think that the secret to my having more energy to CD on vacation than you have lies in my only having one kiddo vs your 4.5!)

Thanks for the input...And it's nice to hear from a dad!

If I have access to a washer I do cloth when we travel, which is most of the time.

If you will have time [as in your trip is not jammed pack like mine is when I go visit my in laws] I would bring them. I use planet soap, when I went to my mom's for two weeks I just brought my own detergent and did an extra rinse like fluff said. I have gotten to the point where I really can't stand the odor of disposable diapers. The times we do use them, they make me gag. But if you're going to be busy, I would just use the sposies.

I agree, if you have time and access to a washer/dryer go for it. We use sposies when we travel b/c MIL has issues with us washing dirty diapers in her washing machine - insert eye roll here

I'm torn too. We used sposies for the move (I just didn't have the time to keep up on the cloth in the last few days). I am headed home for 5 days with the kiddos and am thinking of taking the cloth with and saving the cash. Worst case senario, I can pick up sposies if I need them there.

FWIW, we do prefolds and a wrap as well. Thankfully my mom is totally cool with washing the cloth in her machine.

We use disposables when we are away for overnight or longer. Apart from the washing issue, cloth diapers take up so much space and I like to travel as light as possible.
