So, I tried to set up pre-natal appointments today and was told that the peditricians have suspended pre-natal appointments due to swine flu concerns (for the expectant moms -- they don't want us exposed in their waiting rooms). I kind of looked at websites and screened on the phone. One place has 4 doctors, 3 of whom were recommended to me. Do I just give it a try?

Moonlight, how did your prenatal interview with the ped go?

In other news: We still don't have the "dead" vaccine here and DrK's hospital starts the live vaccine tomorrow. Two of his collegues have been hospitalied with high fevers this weekend and they suspect it could be swine flu. Should I make him stay at a motel?

My appointment is this Friday. This doctor has a "well child" waiting room separate from a "sick child" waiting room. I'm still very nervous to go into the office and be exposed to germs in the common areas... errr even to be in the same room with the doctor. Clearly he is in contact with sick kids all day.

I don't know what I'd do if I come down sick. Last night I got a little choked while sipping water. I thought my abs/muscles in my stomach were going to rip apart! It feels like one big sneeze or cough could tear me open... I can't imagine getting a cold or the flu right now or next week. I'm thinking about canceling the appointment.

But remember... this is coming from someone that has basically quarantined herself at home since the start of September for fear of getting the flu.

I really want to meet this doctor before I have the baby, on the other hand I really really really don't want to get sick. It seems like the pediatrics office could be ground zero for all things sickly here in town.

FYI: most pediatrician offices that I have been in have this feature but most people don't stay in the correct areas so to speak. Take that for what its worth but if you are concerned about the flu I would stay away from the peds office. Of course you would likely be just fine but those waiting rooms are a breading ground for all kinds of yuck.

ETA: You might want to ask them if they separate the suspected flu cases. Our pediatricians office brings those children in the back door and puts then in a completely separate area so as not to expose the entire office.

The Pediatrician's office is a teeming cesspool of germy yuck. and since my husband works in not one but TWO I've become decidedly blase about the whole germ thing.

I'd avoid licking the floor in the peds office but other than that, there's not much else you can do. I mean, there's no such thing as sterile anywhere. Run into someone at the grocery store who just coughed in to their hand or touch the gas pump while filling your car or pick up that carton of eggs that the person w/ a cold just decided they didn't want- or any other of a number of things that we all have to do to live.

Just keep YOUR hands washed and make sure the dawkter in your life sheds their germ laden swamp clothes away from your general vacinity and you'll be about as safe as you can be.

That's it. I'm canceling. You talked me into it. With all the daily added pain and discomfort I'm in, I can't think about getting sick right now. I'm going to call tomorrow and find out if he'll do a phone interview with me. Otherwise, I'll meet him when I meet him.
