Babies in the pool question

  • Babies in the pool question

What do babies wear when you take them into a swimming pool?

I've seen little swimsuits and bikinis () for baby girls, but don't they have to wear a diaper underneath? Or do they just go in a diaper bottom?

    TIA

I'm completely paranoid. My babes wore/wear a swim diaper, plastic diaper cover, and swimsuit with built-in swim diaper (Gymboree usually has a good selection of these). I don't want to be the mom that causes the pool to shut down because my kid poops in it. For our backyard baby pool, I just put them in whatever - I change the water daily, so it doesn't really matter.

alison, you can use the BG covers (take out the liner) that serves the same purpose as a swim diaper. A swim diaper is only meant to contain the poop because urine is sterile.

I usually just use a swim diaper and a swim suit.

Most pools will require a swim diaper - the ones I've worked at often had a few on hand or sold them (but don't count on it). As for swimsuits - I've seen cute little swimsuits to just the swim diapers. For those with little ones that get so cold that they start to turn blue (believe me, it happens...I taught swim lessons for years) I highly recommend these: http://www.warmbelly.com/ They are tiny little swimsuits that cover the torso (made of neoprene) that help immensely. They were designed and made locally where I grew up, but the business ships throughout the US and I see them all over the place now. I recommend them for infants, but more so for 2-5 year olds that are in swimming lessons. I plan to buy them for my little one...in each size!

          Sorry for the hijack!!

I reuse the swim dipes too. They dont keep the pee in-they arent meant to- so if there is no poop they get set out in the sun til they dry out.

Thanks! I didn't know I could use the diapers I've already got (BumGenius). I think I'll still buy dd a suit 1) because they're so cute, and 2) babies are slippery!

We also use and resuse swim diapers and little E has a two piece swimsuit he wears for his class. When we go away for the summer (on the vineyard) we use a one piece because the water is pretty chilly.

Most places with regular diapers have swim ones as well. We usually get them at CVS or Target.

In some places (like parts of Chicagoland), they are considered seasonal and harder to find. Babies R Us always has them, IME.
