Warning: Pampers Dry Max Diapers and Chemical Burn

I am so glad your little one is feeling better. I don't know what kind of substance is involved in the "dry max technology" as the advertisement states, but clearly it's not safe. Keep us updated on your DH's experience with pampers. This whole situation makes me furious! Saw a commercial for the diapers last night....grrr....

Of course I didn't take pictures - I really should have. And, yes, anyone who knows my husband knows that he would definitely feel the need to call and argue with someone making $10/hr about the scientific causes of diaper rash. This morning, he pulls out a book that he helped author, flips to the section that includes diaper rashes, and sure enough, he authored it. What a nerd!

DD is a new child today (which makes me feel a little worse). She slept from 7:30-4:30 and 5:00-8:00, basically just waking up to eat. After spending most of yesterday diaper free, getting an oatmeal bath, and being slathered in some crazy creams, her rash/burn is almost gone. When DH got home from work, he was livid. He seriously wants to sue Pampers, and he's very anti-litigation for most things (I think because he feels like a target for suit most days). Well, come to find out, he's written a few medical chapters on diaper rash, which is kind of random. So, he's going to give Pampers a call Monday and push on their risk management a bit. Seeing as how he's some kind of crazy diaper-rash expert, I think he should!

it really is absurd, though. I mean, it should have come out in testing, but now they're getting complaints about it, they should pull it. Go Dr. Deebs!

We switched to disposables when O was 11months. I have been using Pampers Cruisers and they have been good, until now. I got a case of them and O is a bit sensitive to them. He had a slight rash but not too bad like a burn. He seems okay with them but I'll be switching to something else when the box is done. Also the new pampers sag way worse than the previous. I hope these get recalled. Not happy!!

Pampers with Dry Max

I just came across this discussion and really wanted to respond and share with you some of my own personal experiences. As you know, we have seen some parents reporting that their children experienced severe rashes when using Dry Max. After a comprehensive evaluation, we have found no connection whatsoever to the reported diaper rashes and the materials we use in the Dry Max diaper. As background, this diaper contains the same type of ingredients as our previous Cruisers diaper. The improvement is that we were able to design it in a new way, to make the diaper 20% thinner than before. At the same time, diaper rash is a very common occurrence. At any given time, more than 2 million US babies have diaper rash with 10% of the cases being classified as severe. As a mom, my heart goes out to anyone who is dealing with a rash, and I can see why a parent might blame a new diaper if their baby’s rash happened at the same time as the switch. My older son had experienced severe rashes when he was wearing the old Cruisers. I was convinced it was the diaper, but our pediatrician assured us that diaper rashes rarely have to do with the diaper. In fact, I know Pampers always get an uptick in rash complaints every time a change is made – even if it’s just a change of characters on the outside of the diaper. The complaints this time are actually trending low (about 2 rash complaints for every 1 million diaper changes!), but the difference this time is they are playing out in social media which is a lot more visible to consumers. Please know, our first and only priority is the health and well being of babies. We would never release any product that gave us even the slightest cause for concern – in fact Dry Max is one of the most tested product in our history. I'm pretty sure this is their standard letter - the Facebook group got a very similar, if not the same, response. Yet they're not willing to do anything universally?

H hasn't called yet (funny enough, if this person hadn't posted, I might have forgotten to have him call today). DD is still recovering from her rash. It got about a million times better after getting her out of the Pampers. It's great that not all kids are reacting to them, but what she had was definitely NOT a diaper rash. I have three kids with very different skin types - I know what a few different types of diaper rash look like. This was like nothing I had seen before. I really wish I had taken pictures.

I actually bought a couple of cloth diapers. While DD is much better, she still has some obvious discomfort when I change her. My ped basically said since she's having a hard time going diaper free (she scratches like crazy and irritates everything) that he would try non-disposables for at least a few days and see if that helps. I've also become the crazy lady in the diaper aisle who talks to all the other people in the aisle. In case I hadn't figured it out from the internet, I'm finding that I don't have the only kid in my area who has had this type of severe reaction.

I'm sorry, but this is Deeb's husband. Not only am I a board certified emergency physician, but I literally have written textbook chapters on candidiasis and diaper rashes. I'm something of an expert. What our daughter had was NOT a diaper rash. It was a chemical burn (BTW - Did I mention my MPH in Enviromental Toxicology). Point blank Tricia - you are either a bot, a shill, or hopelessly uninformed. Either way, how DARE you come to this of all forums, where the members are spouses of physicians, meeting together to share their experiences, and suggest that they, of all moms and dads, can't recognize simple diaper rashes.

Oh no Cheri - you really would have loved to hear the phone call he just made to Pampers. First of all, they wouldn't put him in touch with anyone from Risk Management. Then, they tried to somehow discuss the science behind all of this. Yeah, argue with a physician about science when you're not a physician. Not such a good idea. We're now waiting for a call back from someone who actually understands the difference between a diaper rash and a chemical burn. Will keep you all posted.
