Update from Dad:
Hello Everyone,

First I would like to thank you all for your kind e-mails and your continued thoughts and prayers. We cannot express how much they truly mean to our family. Avery had a successful surgery yesterday that lasted about 5 hours. Both holes in her heart were successfully repaired. With one of them being much larger than they expected. Once taken off heart bypass her heart started again, and is currently beating with a correct rhythm. Avery was on a respirator and started to breathe on her own when they removed it this afternoon. That was a huge milestone. However, the doctors caution that we are early in the game and not out of the woods quite yet, but are very hopeful that everything will proceed as expected.

Avery has been taken off some of her pain medicine and continues to regain consciousness. By the end of the day, we hope she is able to drink clear liquids which is another huge milestone, otherwise, they will continue to feed her via IV. Barring any setbacks, Avery should be moved from the ICU to a regular room possibly as early as Friday afternoon and then 3 – 4 more days in the hospital. Lisa and I cannot say enough about the outstanding care we are receiving at Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Great news! If they are at CMH in Chicago, they are in great hands. We have had many family members treated there, and they take such great care of their little patients.

As of now, Avery is still in ICU and has developed a partially collapsed lung on her right side upper lobe. Avery has been placed on an IV for feeding as she has not been taking in a lot of formula and when she does it is expelled. Her blood report has an elevated white blood cell count that is either an early infection or caused by the partially collapsed lung.

Treatment for the lung is physical therapy for now and we will see the status after the x-ray tomorrow. Avery is being given oxygen through her nose because her oxygen level decreases either from fluid in her lungs or the collapse. We will know more tomorrow. They also were not able to take out the central lines because she is still draining too much fluid from her chest cavity.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear she is doing so well! I assume that means no infection and that the lung isn't having to much of an impact on her?

Latest Avery update from Dad:

Avery was released from the hospital on Tuesday late afternoon. Avery still has a partial collapsed lung on the upper right lobe, which is getting better through time. The last test they preformed (Tuesday morning) was a swallow test by her speech therapist and it came back with poor results. Some of the formula that she is taking in is going into her wind pipe/lungs. That is causing her to vomit and fluid to buildup in her lungs. The amount is low to moderate which is good. The doctors have recommended that we add thickener to her formula to help in the swallowing issue and medicine to get rid of the extra fluid. It seems to be working as she has not thrown up since, and is eating better. The only concern with the fluid going into her lungs is an infection that could lead to pneumonia. We were instructed to keep her out of public areas for the next several weeks, and away from people with potential colds. We are hoping the problem will resolve itself through retraining her body to swallow or simply having her body strengthen. This could take up to another 8 months. If the problem still persists after that time, then a feeding tube will be inserted directly into her stomach. Chances are that won’t happen. We will continue to monitor her with doctor visits every week with the surgeons, cardiac specialists, and speech therapist until she is 100%.
