  • Boy diaper question

Ok gang, help me out! It really doesn't matter that Robert isn't sleeping through the night at this point because he can't go the whole night without leaking through his diaper. I moved him up to size 3 after he soaked through a 2 in less then 2 hours during the day this week, I just thought it was a night thing. Then I bought the Huggies Overnight diapers, also in 3's. Last night was the first night I put one on him.

I went down at 6:30 and was fine when I checked him at 2 when he was up but he and his pajamas and his sleep sack were soaked when he woke up at 6:30. I know 12 hours is a long time but don't a lot of kids sleep through the night without soaking through their diaper?

Yes, I'm pointing his penis down in the diaper. But he sleeps on his stomach and I think its a gravity thing, once he fills the front of the diaper its not filling the back its just leaking.

I'm not really willing to try Pampers with all that is going on with them right now - any suggestions? BTDT?

The other thing I'm wondering though is if he's eating to much. He's been taking 7oz bottles and gets about 35 ounces during the day plus whatever he takes at night, usually 1-2 bottles. Yesterday he finished those off very easily so I switched him to a 9oz bottle at both of his night feedings last night, the first one he didn't take 1/2 the second one he finished. I don't know - why does he always throw me a curve ball when dad isn't home??

When you diaper him do you make sure his penis is pointing down? I found that made all the difference with boys.

      Re: Boy diaper question

I would go up a size again. I use Huggies Overnights at night because mine soak through the cloth at night. I have Kai in a size 5... It covers his belly button but he doesn't leak out the top any more. I also have to put him in full zip up sleepers so he doesn't shove his hand in his diaper and move his penis while he sleeps. He is also a belly sleeper and so I make sure to put most of the diaper in he front, so from behind it almost looks like you could have a crack spill.

You may also consider trying to shift more feedings to the afternoon/day. Though that's harder to do sometimes.

I'd suggest trying Seventh Generation for overnights. I know I sound like a zealot, but I am absolutely amazed at how much more absorbent they are. When I was pregnant w/Mattie, I visited a friend who used SG. We were with her kids at a wading fountain, and her little girl plopped right down in the water, then got up and walked to me with her arms up to be picked up (the first time she'd ever asked me to pick her up, so I didn't want to refuse!). I expected to get a big wet splotch on my side from where the diaper squished on me -- but NOTHING. They're really great!

Hmm, ok - up another size would put him in the same size as his sister - is that possible? She weighs 25 pounds, he weighs 16.

Jenn, maybe I'll see about the SG - do you know where I can get them? You know my shopping options are limited.

I think Babies R Us sells them. I buy them online at Amazon. I could mail you a couple . If you do buy them, they run small, so if he's on the edge size wise, go up.

And truly, if his penis is not pointing in the correct direction it won't matter what diaper you have because the front just cannot hold all that pee.

No, his penis is pointing down - that can't be the problem. I've been religious about that since day 1.

Funny, my advise was going to be the opposite of Michele's -- thought I defer to her expertise as she's been a mother to boys longer than I have. I've noticed that BabyK leaks out when his diaper is too big. . . . and blows out when the diaper is too small. When we are between sizes, it's a matter of deciding which type of mess I'd prefer.

I'm using Huggies. My SIL has two boys. She likes Huggies or Luvs. I've heard a lot of mothers of girls recommend Pampers.

With DS, I couldn't use regular Huggies - they had to be Huggies Supreme. Costco's diapers (although I realize there is no Costco there) are the same, it seems, as Huggies Supreme. DD is also about 16 pounds and is in a size 3 diaper. I had to change her in the middle of the night because she woke up to eat and seemed totally full. A 4 seems like it would be huge on her!

DS1 was the same way when he was little. I eventually purchased Gerber Rubber pants to put on over his disposable huggies goodnights...the crib and jammies would be dry because they contained any leakage.
I ALSO was religious about my kids wearing onsies. I just made it part of their routine: diaper, gerber onsie, and then I'd dress them. During the the days (in the hottest months) you can just throw on a pair of shorts over one & in the cooler months it was basically like having an undershirt on them. The most important factor of using the onsie is that THEY HELP to keep diapers properly in place on a baby, as well as contain messy leaks so the colthing was often spared from the worst stains.I purchased the tank style onsies for the girls so that I could dress them in summer dresses w/ out sleeves showing. I have always looked at babies w/sagging loose diapers that slip down and wondered "why on earth anyone would want it that way" when a onsie would help keep it in in place. I also never put on a onsie that was too big, as a diaper would be able to shift and sag if it didn't fit well. So in short onsies, going w/ a larger size huggies overnight, and rubber pants helped to keep my heavy wetter's crib & clothing dry until AM.

BTW I don't just use the onsies while they are infants/babies, I keep them in onsies until potty training!

Have you tried the Target brand diapers? Sophie is a HEAVY wetter at night. When I am not using cloth, I use the Target brand and they have been pretty good. In cloth, I go up a size in the covers and use 2 prefolds. She has the biggest, widest bottom ever, but she finally doesn't leak all over...

I didn't have this issue with ds, but I worked with a girl who had issues with her son. If I remember correctly, she used to put a cloth diaper (the basic "burp cloth" type) inside of an overnight diaper. I imagine you may need to buy a size bigger disposable diaper since it might be a bit bulky with a cloth one inside. I believe it worked reasonably well for her. I sympathize with frequent crib sheet changes...very annoying.

For the sheet changes - I make my cribs as follows:

                              crib sheet
                              rubber sheet
                              crib sheet

That way, in the middle of the night, you just pull of a crib sheet and rubber sheet, and the bed is made. Learned this once I figured out that kids only seem to vomit in the middle of the night
