  • Idiot mom of the day award....

goes to me On Thursdays we have music class for E and I decided to get to class early for once. We get to the parking lot (2 blocks down from the class) and as I get out of the car (with keys and diaper bag), I see our music instructor pull up with his son. So I wave and they were going to pull in next to our car so I stupidly threw our stuff back in the car (E is still in his car seat) and I close the door to make room for him to pull up. As I close the door, I hear beep beep...OH F**K!!! I just locked the door and E is still in there. So of course, I start to panic and the music instructor jumps out and calls the police and then we both remember there is a fire station literally across the street from the parking lot (THANK GOD)! So the fireman walk across the street (all 5 guys) with crowbars etc. After 10 minutes they jimmy the door to the car and finagle a way to press the automatic button. E was fine because he found some old preztels in his car seat and thought we were all putting on a show. So about an hour after this all happened on the way home from music class, I start crying and call DH and have like 2 minutes to get this all out as he is walking into the OR. I have sworn off leaving the house today because I have a gut feeling that we should just stay put...no matter how nice it is. BTW, they were totally prepared to break the window if E was hysterical and both my husband and I thought....hmmm he can be hysterical for at least 2 minutes before we completely break the window.

Oh wow! I can totally see myself doing that! So glad you didn't end up needing to break the window and everything was fine!

Oh hon. No - mine still wins. I've done that one too, though. I locked Maytie in the car when she was 3 weeks old.

Oh no, and all that good-mommy effort to be there early too. Somedays you just cannot win.

I'm always worried about this. I once locked my keys in the car twice within 12 hours and I've shut the garage door on the car. Something about the car makes me so scatterbrained so I am a prime candidate for locking my baby in the car. It's always so awkward when I have to juggle a diaper bag, keys, baby, carseat, etc. I usually have multiple doors open at once and I'm running around the car like a maniac.

I locked A in the car at the Target parking lot! I think she was 4 months old. Luckily we had just gotten there so the car wasn't hot but if I had done it after we'd been in the store the car would have been hot from sitting in the sun. I know it sucks as the mom but don't beat yourself up to bad, you're both fine and stronger for it!

Thanks so much ladies! I had this horrible image that I was going to be on the news as the bad mom who locked their kid in the car and social services was going to show up at my door. I seriously haven't left the house since we got back...Tomorrow is a new day!

It happens a lot more than you think and you acted quickly. You're human! And you're still a great mom!
