A is very much in that "me do it" stage so when we get home from wherever we've been I unhook her car seat and she climbs out of it and the car and shuts the door by herself. Sometimes she climbs up into the front seat and pushes the button on the garage door remote before she climbs out. Today we got home just before lunch and I was rushing to feed R before he fell asleep. I unhooked her and while I was getting R out she started reaching for the garage door button so I told her to shut the door and climb out while R and I went in the house. As the door to the house was closing behind me I heard the garage door go down. So I put R in his high chair, got his lunch out then started making A's. I yelled at her from the house a couple of times because she had not come in yet. After I finished making her lunch I went out to get her because she hadn't come in yet, I knew she had probably climbed up into the driver's seat to play as she had before since I had the keys and I knew the garage door was down I wasn't that worried about her.
She was out there MAYBE 7 minutes, definitely no more then that and it was probably closer to 5. She was sitting in the passenger's seat in the front and had opened the glove box and had found her head phones for her DVD player. She had them on and was pretending to be dancing. She was SWEATING like a pig! I then realized how hot it was in the garage, how hot she was in the car and how scary it was that in about 5 minutes she had become this warm. This was not a case of me forgetting her, this was a case of me thinking she would find and letting her show a little of her independence. I will now be locking the door from the house to the garage at all times. It was a very scary reminder of what can happen and how fast things can happen in the heat. Its about 85 here today with a heat index of just over 90 so in a warmer location it would have gotten very bad very quickly.
