  • When did your kiddo stop napping?

I think O is about to drop his one and only early afternoon nap. I am blissfully writing this while he IS napping. He's skipped his nap three out of five days this week. He just wasn't tired and unless I kept at it for two hours he wouldn't sleep. He actually managed quite well and then went to bed a liitle early and fell asleep quickly. Usually it takes over an hour for him to fall asleep at night. So, it has it's benefits, however he seems kind of young to me to be going to no nap- O is 25.5 months - and I so desparetly need the midday break from him. I deal much better with the rest of the day when I get a break. So, when did your kiddo stop napping? Was it a quick one day napping next day never again or did it tapper off?

3 of my kids quit their naps around 6 months (I KNOW!!! let's not talk about it) and the lone napper took naps until about age 2 - 2.5. My kids tapered off, shorter and shorter naps.

I think we're the exception though and most kids nap for several years.

DS#2 is 2.5yo and naps probably half the time. On the days he naps it takes him an hour or two to fall asleep at night, on the days he doesn't nap he goes to sleep right away. I don't feel like he's completely ready to give up his nap, so I'm going to continue letting him nap when he wants.

I forced DS#1 to give up his nap when he was about 3-3.5yo. He was just staying up too late at night and it was becoming a problem, so I instituted "quiet time" instead. He had to play quietly in his room until the kitchen timer went off (I think it was an hour, maybe a little longer if *I* needed more time ). If you want him to stop napping but still give you a break you could try having O do quiet time in his room.

migirl- I really like the idea of quiet time. I like that it keeps an official 'down time' even if not sleeping.

Caleb stopped napping for me at home around 20 months. At daycare he still napped, but not at home. Sophie at 21 months still takes a 2-3 hour nap daily. She skips maybe one nap a month... Caleb stopped napping really suddenly. One weekend he napped as normal, the next he screamed for hours, until I let him out. He also refused to sleep in a crib at the exact same time. It sucked!

Adele goes in her room for quiet time every day at 1pm, she is to sit in her bed with a book and she only has a lamp or her flashlight on. She ALWAYS falls asleep, it was a control issue and once I gave her the control of when to go to sleep we got past the battle of bed time and nap time. So she is 2 years 10 months and still naps for 90 minutes+ and then goes to bed at 8. She can come out of her room at anytime but only to go to the bathroom which is right next to her room. We put a baby gate up so she can't get into the rest of the house.

Cora stopped napping right around her second birthday. I think that's early, and hope Hazel keeps her nap longer.

Daegan (4) still takes a 1-1.5h nap about 6 out of 7 days. He sleeps at night from about 7:30p to 5-7a....his wake up time is very variable. Early mornings just mean nap time is pushed earlier.

Kai (2) would do well with 2 naps each day, but only gets one long one (2-3h). He would be ready for bed earlier, but he goes down at 7p and wakes up when D does....lately though K has been night waking 3 or 4 times....and his naps have been interrupted....it's like he's waking almost fully after every sleep cycle and can't get himself back to sleep.

My sister and I continued napping into elementary school though. We used to nap after school and on weekends. Even now we both require a lot of sleep to function well. I go to bed between 8 and 9p and get up with the kids.

-four years, two months (Yup, I was lucky and even then losing it was traumatic)
                  -three years

ITA with forced "quiet time" or mommy goes into high meltdown alert.

DD1 - stopped when she entered kindergarten. She was still taking two, 2-hour naps every day until she entered school. She went to bed at 8pm and got up at 8am. Every day.
                    DD2 - stopped at 9 months.
DS - stopped at about 16 months.

LOL- just goes to show you that NO kids are alike!

My DD-1 napped well until Kindergarten- but I would wake her up if she was going too late. She napped at daycare too.
Twins- dropped morning nap at about 9 months, then took an afternoon nap of about 90 min until 18 months? Maybe? I kept *quiet time* which was a joke because since they were together, there was no *quiet* But it gave me a break. Quiet time until they were about 4, then it progressed to *quiet time* on the couch looking at a book, no tv.
DS-2 napped ok, but dropped the afternoon nap at about 20 months too. He did quiet time and STILL needs it but there's no time for quiet time in the schedule.
DD-3-- She is interesting. She dropped the morning nap, if you count 20 minutes as a nap, at about 5 months. Then she really didn't TAKE her afternoon nap either. I know she was overtired, but she would CIO for over an hour every day. For weeks! And I wasn't really ready to let her cry all afternoon. Then out of the blue at about 15 months she started wanting her afternoon nap. I had given up hope that she'd ever take one. Now she loves her nap. And of course she sleeps better at night. So she's 26 months and still going strong- her naps are usually 90 minutes.

Aloha from paradise! And the other side of training!

Dude would still nap except that he's far too 'busy', lthough two weeks ago he fell asleep on the foot of my bed and slept for three hours. I think if it was allowed in 1st grade, he'd probably do it, still.

He also goes to bed at 8pm like clockwork- will request going to bed if he's up late or feels tired and gets up on non-school days about 7:30.

I say daily thanks to the babushkas at the orphanage to getting his little arse in line from a very early age.

Awww, too sweet Jen. Our oldest will ask to go to bed early if she's tired, too. But she's decidedly NOT a morning person until at least 10:30am. I'd like to be able to blame that on the teenager vampire (up all night, sleep all day) thing, but she's unfortunately just her mother's daughter. We are not happy morning peeps around these parts.
