  • Cough Syrup

Ok, so I'm very irritated about the fact that you aren't supposed to give kids cough syrup under the age of six - REALLY?!?!?! A has this awful cough related to this awful cold she has had for two days now, today I could no longer take listening to her cough or looking at her obviously sad/uncomfortable face so I went to the store bought the Children's Dimetapp Cold & Flu and gave her half a dose which is a teaspoon. She is asleep now but if she wakes up in the middle of the night I'm going to give her another one (its been 5 hours now since she got the last one).

Anyone have any idea what the old dosing was when they used to allow you to give this stuff to your children? DH has been in the OR all day and I haven't talked to him since yesterday. I've googled everything under the sun I could think of to try to find the old dosage charts but they don't seem to be out there.

Or is there something you guys give your kids when they're in this situation? Adele is 3. Poor thing.

We use a teaspoon for Benedryl. And as you know, I have no children over six.

This page has dosing instructions down to 2 years old for robitussin syrups. It also lists the ingredients, so if it's the same stuff, you should be able to figure it out: http://www.rxmed.com/b.main/b2.pharm...OBITUSSIN.html

It really sucks. But I do the same thing when they are sick. But, then I call my BIL, the pharmacist, to verify dosing.

Sorry to hear about the awful cough - but I'm all for banning cough meds for kids. We gave my oldest robitussin when she was little, and she had a horrible reaction to the dextromethorphan. We didn't realize it at first, but she would burst out crying for no reason, smacked another kid in preschool with no provocation, and acted pretty weird until we discontinued the DM. These were completely out of character.
She also had a terrible reaction to claritin - seemed to be hallucinating.
None of my other kids ever got any OTC cold meds. (though for DD2 we'd be lost without our albuterol inhaler!)

And stay the hell away from Delsym, that stuff causes all sorts of awful side effects and does nothing for the cough.

ETA: I should note that we gave Triaminic Night time to all four of our oldest without incident, but also without effect. It did however allow them to sleep when they had bad colds which was a huge bonus for me

It has allowed her to sleep, after the first dose yesterday afternoon I have only given it to her at bed and nap. Last night a sitter was here so she didn't get a dose at bed but when she came to my room at 4am miserable I gave her a dose and she slept until 7:30. I appreciate the stories though and will keep an eye on her.

I have given it to DS, with HORRIBLE side-effects re: his behavior. I would definitely give the minimum, to test it out.

I've given it to DD#1 with no problems.

I'm only giving her a 1/2 tsp, I thought I posted that - I guess I didn't. DH is on his way home for the first time since Monday morning so he can have a vote too.

I had never heard of this before. I'm off to google this.

Not much help here since mine is under 1, but have you tried a teaspoon of dark honey? There was a study awhile back about that working better than cough syrup in some kids, so it might be worth a try to see if it helps A. Hope she gets feeling better soon, and so glad she was able to sleep!

I think she is past it, I didn't give her a dose last night before bed because I forgot and I only heard her cough a few times. R is probably next but I know not to give it to him. Thanks for the honey suggestion I'll have to try that next time.

Cheri, I also give the kids honey on account of the study LadyM mentioned. It seems to work okay, and the kids love it. Worth a shot.
