  • Fever/Diarrhea

Ok, oh wise ones. We got sent home from childcare at the gym today because R had two diarrhea diapers back to back after he ate his snack. He did feel warm when I picked him up even though he had felt and acted fine this morning. So I brought him home and his temp was 101.6 so I gave him some acetaminophen - I've been making sure he's been drinking lots of water and he attempted to eat his lunch but only ate a few grapes and a few crackers. After which he had another icky diaper. He is now taking his nap but did seem to feel better shortly after I gave him the meds.

He is a really regular kid, one dirty diaper every morning after breakfast usually. Do you think I need to call? I'm guessing its just a stomach bug and he'll be fine once it passes, lets just hope he doesn't pass it to his sister!

Honestly, if it were me, I'd probably let him ride it out. If he is taking fluids and his fever is manageable, I'd do what I could to see if we could avoid a dr visit. I hope he feels better.

Agree. I wouldn't bother call unless he is dehydrated and or feeling super crummy. It probably is just a virus and there isn't much that can be done other than riding it out. As long as he is having at least 1 wet diaper every 8 hours, they won't do much for him either other than hand him a popsicle.

Thanks guys that is pretty much where I'm at, I'll see how he is after he wakes up from nap.

So he woke up from nap and his temp was 99.6 so I gave him his snack and some water and then right after giving him another dose of acetamenaphin he threw up a little and had another icky diaper though this one wasn't as bad as this mornings. I'm going to have DH bring home some pedialite and some applesauce, hopefully I can get him to eat something and keep it down.

So his fever is better this morning, 100 after not having any meds since 7pm last night. I gave him another dose and he ate a banana, apple sauce and some toast for breakfast and then had another runny/icky diaper. He's not puking which I'm forever thankful for but I'm wondering if I should be giving him something else to eat or less of what I've given him?? He's still drinking his water but won't drink the pedialyte - can't say that I blame him it tastes like apple jolly ranchers instead of apple juice - yuck!

Hmmmm I don't have any child experience, so maybe somebody else can back me up, but I think I'd stay away from fruit. I think fructose can trigger/worsen stomach issues.\

Hope the little guy starts feeling better soon!

Well I went with the bananas and apple sauce because of the BART (bananas, applesauce, rice, toast) for upset tummies - maybe not for diarrhea?? We're going to the store soon I'll get some eggos, that is a good idea.

I hope R starts to feel better!

I thought I had heard that the BRAT diet is still good, but not really recommended by peds anymore. As long as the kid isn't vomiting or have any other troubling symptoms, they recommend a regular diet. I could be wrong though, I'm trying to remember what DH told me the last time I had a stomach bug.

Here's what one of my favorite websites has to say about diarrhea: http://kidshealth.org/parent/infecti....html#cat20048 (scroll to page 4 for treatment info)

That's helpful, thanks S! I have that website bookmarked but I never remember to check it. Ok, we'll try a regular snack and lunch and see how it goes.

I wouldn't worry about the pedialyte, our ped says water is generally superior. If he's drinking that and not showing signs of dehydration, I'm betting that is okay.

And now A has it too. I'd so much rather deal with runny diapers then vomit.

Bananas and apple sauce ARE the fruits to give when a kid has diarreha. It's part of the BRAT diet: Bananas Rice Applesauce Toast.

It's annoying, but as long as he's drinking the water he won't get dehydrated, and it can take awhile for the bananas and applesauce to kick in. It's still a bug that needs to run it's course.

ETA: I just saw the other responses re: BRAT. I don't know what the new recs are, but I do know that Mattie is very "either end of the spectrum" when it comes to her diapers. Too much banana or applesauce results in way too firm, and too much other fruit in general results in way too loose, so I know that it does work. They used to say nothing else at all, and perhaps that has changed, but I can't imagine it would hurt in your goal to firm things up.

Cheri - another thing to look for at the store might be those applesauce/fruit mash ups that come in little pouches they suck down. They've got them in lots of variety, and I initially didn't realize that applesauce is an ingredient in all of them. (Couldn't figure out why Mattie kept having such firm diapers).
