So R woke up at 5am this morning, he's been waking up earlier since we moved to this house so I stayed in bed hoping he would go back to sleep. After about 5 minutes I knew he wouldn't so I went in and picked him up. As soon as I did I knew he was to hot! I took his temp, while he screamed, and it was 103 rectally! Our house was warm last night and I thought his room was warm when I went in there so I first thought I just needed to cool him down, I took off his pajamas and changed his diaper and just put him in a onesie, gave him some tylenol and then gave him his sippy with water in it. He chugged his sippy like he was parched! Ten minutes later just as I had picked up the phone to call DH (who of course is on call and spent the night at the hospital) he throws up on both of us. Luckily I was standing in the kitchen and not on the carpet.
When DH heard a temp of 103 and vomiting he said you need to bring him to the ER, I just wanted him to look up the 24 hour peds nurse number. So at 5:40 I got dressed, went down and woke up A, got her dressed and went to the ER.
Robert cried until the car started moving and then he kind of dozed off but as soon as we got to the ER he started crying again. Through all of this he wasn't pulling on his ears or anything, he has had a runny nose and cough the last 36 hours or so. He cried for about another 30 minutes while we waited and then finally dozed off, about 2 minutes before the resident walked in. The resident tried but couldn't get a look at his ears, he said they were red but he didn't see any fluid. So after we waited some more (I was annoyed at the wait) in walks the attending - my friend's husband (yay!). I've never seen him in his work role but have heard great things about him. He listened to his breathing and checked his ears and cleaned the wax out but there was no infection.
So he said to keep an eye on him, fight the fever with ibuprofen and tylenol, and if his breathing seems to be labored after the fever is gone or goes down to let him know. While we were there I didn't feel like an idiot, I'm sure Dr. J had a lot to do with that but as we were driving home I felt like a rookie mom. If I hadn't given him the water he probably wouldn't have thrown up and we probably just could have battled the fever at home...
ETA: Of course he came home and devoured his breakfast and is now cuddled up on the couch watching cartoons, we'll see...
