We found Menards to be cheaper usually.

I use the closet for storage and lock it closed.
This is us, too. Our stuff is still en route, but once it's here, the items I've decided to keep/haven't used yet will be stored inside the closet.
We do have some built-ins, which is so nice, but I'm not sure we'll be in the house for that long period of time (like you are suggesting your family will be).
I'm a big fan of DIY, but I also know it can go horribly wrong, so we'll see what the best option is when the time comes.

BTW, now that K1 is a bit older and in the "I do it myself" phase, keeping his clothes in 1 or 2 drawers works very well. He knows where his clothes are. He can put them away himself and pick out his clothes in the morning.

We ended up going with the Menard's pieces - basically DH designed and built the closet system. I don't remember how much it cost total, but maybe $150? I've been super happy with it.

I saw your FB pics and would like to do something similar to maximize storage space!

It's basically 4 of the pre-drilled (shelf holes) boards, 1 non-drilled for the top, pieces cut for the shelves, and 4 closet bars. If you want some more detailed pics, let me know! When's your due-date again?
