First, I am my daughters Primary. She has an ulcer in her mouth and I can't think of anything to give her for the pain because she is allergic to Carafate, and she is breastfeeding. She tried letting a Tums dissolve and it doesn't help. Her Pediatrician told her to call her Primary!!!! Any thoughts from you ladies? Clearly I don't have many breastfeeding patients.

Have her swish some liquid antacid in her mouth and spit it out a couple times a day. DH gets canker-sores like crazy and it's the only thing that helps alleviate the pain and give them a chance to heal.
For whatever reason, chewing up an antacid tablet or letting it dissolve doesn't work anywhere near as well as the liquid.

I was going to suggest LacMed (I think that's how it's spelled) - DH uses it for lactating mothers. It might be just an app, so I'd double check.
Also, if you're kinda crunchy, you might suggest L-Lysine (amino acid): you can pick it up at Whole Foods or any health food store, and dosing is on the back. For whatever reason, HSV hates that stuff. Ulcers/cold sores heal faster with it, IMO.
In addition, avoid nuts, dairy & citrus until it's healed: those tend to aggravate it more.Wife to Family Medicine attending, Mom to DS1 and DS2

It was probably kenalog paste, which they told her not to use while breastfeeding. I totally forgot about the magic mouthwash. I'll check on the ingrtedients. Thanks so much.Luanne
