  • Party ideas for 3 year old boy?!?!

So E is turning 3 on the 16th and we are having a party at our house this Sunday. Since he loves to cook so much we are doing a brunch and the "theme" is little chef but I am stumped on activities for a group of 3 year olds. Our kitchen isn't the best set up for more than 1 or 2 kids cooking at a time (we've got 9 coming!!). Any thoughts on what I can do with the little ones that doesn't require a catastrophe in our kitchen? We have a finished basement where the kids can also play. I just thought 3 was too young to spend money on a place and November is so tricky with weather so it may be too cold to go outside...HELP!!

Its not exactly cooking, but they could each decorate their own cookies. Another idea is to give them each some bread dough. They can knead it and play with it like play dough with instructions to make something with it (animal, monster, truck...) then you bake it for them and they can eat it once its baked. I am sure others have better ideas.

      Sugar cookie "pizzas"
      Regular pizzas
Brunch pizzas (English muffins, scrambled eggs, cheese, crumbled sausage or bacon)

Only the regular pizza would have to be baked during the party. The rest could be prepped before hand.

You could also do muffins. Make a basic sweet muffin batter, portion it out in the tins and let the kids sprinkle in their treat (blueberries, nuts, cranberries, chocolate chips, etc).

Sweet Belgian waffles ice cream sundaes.

You could have some "build your own" foods without actually cooking. Like people have said - pizza and sundaes are fun. Another one that I thought of reading your post is a mashed potato bar. You could have the potatoes already cooked, then put out cheese, bacon, butter, etc. and serve them in plastic cups.

Cookies are also fun if you have some other adults to help. The kids can use the cookie cutters on the dough, then you can have frosting and sprinkles to decorate them later. They could do that in the basement, and someone in the kitchen could take care of baking and cooling them.

I love the sugar cookie "pizza" idea!

We did a banana split party for my brother one year: build your own. It was very popular.

My niece had a Princess and the Frog party and my cousin made mini bundt cakes and had the kids decorate them. Their party favors were aprons [which I made of course]. It was really cute. She said that the kids [and the parents] really enjoyed decorating the cakes.

Loving the decorating pre-cooked things. We've got a strata and pancakes for the menu with fruit, mimosas for the adults and chef hats for the kids. After the cookie decorating should they just free play or should we do something more focused? I know this shouldn't be that complex!

Why not let the kids decorate their hats? As for anything else, they are only going to have a short attention span for organized activities and then they are probably going to need to have free play.

Everyone has given some great ideas, and the decorating their chef's hat is a wonderful idea.

Thanks all! I guess I am just nervous because everyone said yes to the invitation and I was hoping that less folks would come. I am just preparing myself for the destruction that will ensue when all 10 preschool boys run our house down

I think you are brave! And a great mom You have got some great ideas. For that age I think free play is best for the rest of the time.

I would have a couple games available and ready but only if free play is getting out of hand. Maybe pin/ tape the pepperoni on the pizza, freeze dance (you could find kids songs that relate to food), and maybe a bucket game that they toss a food into (like bozo buckets). Every game will go really fast and be prepared for them to lose interest.
