  • Indulge a worried newbie at 4 am...TMI poop

When N woke up tonight to eat, she'd had really nasty, foul smelling diarrhea. She normally poops 2-3 times day or more, but today she only did once and it was on the watery side.

No fever and no changes in my diet. We did start using gripe water a few days ago for what we thought/think were gas symptoms.

Is this a normal variation or something to be concerned about.

Thank you for reading about my child's bowel movements in excruciating detail

It happens. Sometimes it depends on what was consumed during the previous day. DD2 would have the weirdest BMs if she ate or drank anything with certain food dyes, so we started avoiding those items.

Another tidbit: watery poops can be a sign that when she's feeding, she is only nursing long enough to get foremilk, but not hindmilk. Hindmilk is the stuff that has higher fat content.

13, a little green stuff showed up the day before and I read that could be a sign of fore/hindmilk imbalance do I've been extra cautious about that.

Except when it's blue cause your kid ate too much red food coloring. Then it's cool.

Kool-Aid will do make for some insane BM colors.

Good lord, this conversation is taking a hard left turn...

The big picture take away? Food coloring is apparently not digested at all...

I have a cousin who swears that food coloring turns her child into a monster - true or not, I don't know but she claims she is doing much better since she is avoiding most of them...

Yup, but be sure to warn the daycare because they might think the blue stain on their bottom from the food coloring is bruising and call child welfare on you. Its happened!
