  • Teething

I'm not really sure (almost 2 months), but I think we might be on the cusp of teething. It seems really early, but she's been ahead in everything else so far, so why not this? I had lunch with a friend yesterday who had a large baby too and she said it started at about 2 months for her son too.

She's started drooling (she never did before), wants her hands in her mouth more than useful, gets fussy during breastfeeding and screams in pain for no apparent reason during a feeding, and is generally crying more and not able to be consoled by a diaper change, burping, or breastfeeding. The cold washcloth was a big hit today.

So what are your best remedies?

But not under 6 months right? So go with Tylenol or a cold wet washcloth.

        This. Big time this.

But if what Michele says is correct (and I can't remember now), Tylenol can work too. I'd stay away from the Hyland's tablets for now, they've been recently recalled due to inconsistent amounts of belladonna (aka: deadly nightshade). Cool washcloth, frozen washcloth, chewy toys, sophie the giraffe, & breastmilk popsicles all worked for us.

Stick a wet washcloth in the freezer and then see if she'll chew on it.

Frozen bagel. They use them in the ED, and they're effective (with no side effect potential).

except that at 2 months she hasn't been introduced yet to wheat. I wouldn't do that so early. After 6-7 months yes.

Can you call a pediatric dentist? This sounds perhaps overkill, but they can look at the gums and see what's going on and see if it's indeed teething. Just a thought.

Or just show her gums to either grandma (they have a bit of experience between the two of them, lol)

I just re-read the tread. Around six weeks many babies go through a fussy stage/period.

This could also be very true.
If it is teething, you might even be able to see some "buds" of red, swollen gums.
Two months was when we started looking for options, and purchased infant Tylenol for emergencies. He was/still is obsessed with Sophie. What it is about that damn giraffe, I don't know, but it's worth all the Spanish Galleons they make you pay for one.

Yep, my guy was extra fussy and started drooling and chewing on his fists at around that age. I was convinced he was teething. He's now 9 months and still toothless I'm the ultimate baby dummy, though.

The gums will become very swollen, like a bubble, before the tooth erupts. It's usually (not always) the bottom front two teeth that erupt first so look there. Those little ridges on their bottom gum will disappear and look swollen and smooth as the tooth pushes through. If it looks like they are erupting that early I would call your md and get a Tylenol dose based on a recent weight and get it documented in baby's records. They can run low grade fevers, diarrhea from excessive drooling and seem more prone to ear aches.

Both mine had their first tooth cut through at 3 months so yes the symptoms started around 2 months. I find that they are fussiest a couple weeks or so before the tooth comes through, I guess when it's starting to move through the gum?
My DD loses her appetite when she's teething and I give ice cubes in a mesh feeder to numb her gums. Pretty sure we did tylenol and motrin before 6 months too, just a weight calculated dose, I wasn't aware of a 6 month rule!
