Not Strep??

Ask your ped what he/she is comfortable with in terms of going back. Our school says 24 hours, but they also declare a fever to be 99.

So this morning I'm pretty sure she does have it, she has an appointment at 10:30. If she starts the antibiotics this morning can she go back to school tomorrow? I've read a couple places online that have said once she's taken it for 24 hours she can...(assuming her fever is gone of course)

ETA: Tomorrow is pancake and pajama day that she's been looking forward to for weeks, I don't even thing grandma and grandpa arriving is going to make up for missing that.

I always wait the mandatory 24 hours plus some. I think it will also depend how she feels in the morning, even if you have past the 24 hours she might not feel good enough to go to school. I would play it by ear.

So now that she's had strep should she have her tonsils out too? Is that related?

It is related. I had strep multiple times each year growing up, and it was because my tonsils were an infected mess. Got those suckers out when I was 13 and haven't had strep since. DD had strep 3 times and ped ENT said her tonsils had to go. She had them out when she was 4 and has not had strep since (she will be 10 on Thurs). Talk to your ped about it today.

Strep for me is nausea, chills, body aches, fever, extremely sore throat, headache, and a wish for death to come.

I'll ask dh tonight Cheri. But he would always recommend tonsils out for kids with sleep apnea. Tonsils and adenoids.

It's funny though bc dh says there's a saying amongst dorky doctors-- "you can always tell who the kids of ENTs are. They are the ones who still have their tonsils.". That's bc ENTs recommend taking out tonsils a lot but they know it's such a lousy recovery for the kiddos they do everything possible to avoid it!!! That being said, dh still said he'd take out the tonsils if it were one of our kids with sleep apnea. Even given his "inside knowledge".

But I'll ask him specifically about the strep angle. My dd got lots of strep infections at that age-- all presented as scarlet fever. She had maybe 4 in one year alone. She had very large tonsils and they thought she might need them out, but she is fine now and tonsils and strep is not a problem. She does still have more sore throat symptoms than others when she gets a cold though. But my dd didnt have the sleep apnea and her adenoids were normal. So my understanding is that taking out the tonsils for recurrent strep is done-- but only after a certain threshold. Since you have other issues going on I'm not sure how it would impact.

I don't think step throat = get the tonsils out, but like Peggy said, sleep apnea is a very good reason to get them removed.

My DD must have been an exception to the rule; her recovery was a breeze! She was up and running around the same day. I could not keep that kid down to rest but she did not have any pain whatsoever. Her tonsils were so huge (overlapping) that she immediately felt like a million bucks after surgery.

Get the ped to write a note on when she is safe to return to school and then play it by ear (is she improved? is she feeling much better?)

So they didn't swab her, maybe I should have insisted but they said its not strep just a bad virus. So we continue to treat her with honey for the cough and ibuprofen.

I know the diagnosis is not strep at this point--

I did ask dh about tonsils and strep. He says the guideline is to take out the tonsils if a kid has 7 separate throat infections or strep infections in one year, 5 or so a year for two years, 3 or so a year for 3 years... Those are guidelines.

Anyway the ENT would be more concerned with the sleep apnea than the infections. So that's his run down.

He literally was nodding off while telling me this, so I'm not sure how medically accurate it is lol. Dude needs to get some sleep. Maybe waking up at 4:30 to get in a workout before rounds isn't such a hot idea...

I had strep a ton as a kid and still have my tonsils. I've also had it a few times as an adult.

DD has had exact same symptoms for a few days and I finally took her in today. They did swab and it was negative but she does have an ear infection. My plan was to keep her home tomorrow and then back to daycare on Friday but my parents think it's horrible irresponsible to do that, so my mom took the day off on Friday to take DD.

Hope A feels better soon.

She's a hundred times better today. Went back to school today and has been fine other then the runny nose.
