I think poly vi sol smells kind of good. I'm crazy though! I think I'm biased, because my daughter needs the vitamins. She is going through another phase right now where she eats 2 Pringles, and pushes away all other food.

Living in MN they recommend that even older children and adults take vitamin D because we spend SO MUCH time inside in the winter. Breastmilk was perfect when we were a nomadic society and even when everyone spent hours every day outside but we don't do that anymore. Its the lack of being outside that is the issue, the sun is a good thing.

Yeah that's what I figured. But given that D inherited my almost albino skin, I'll go with vitamins instead if sunburn.

Oh yes, I agree - I sunburn easily too. My point is that while breastmilk is the only thing babies need in many senses it doesn't include enough Vitamin D.

Yep, I agree, I'm big on the evolutionary argument but this is one area where logic says Nature might be a little behind the times. My babies were born in Phoenix so even when D started getting the news I didn't worry about it much, but definitely if I were to have a baby in this more overcast climate I'd look into it. (Honestly I should be looking into it for myself and my preschoolers but I'm lazy.)

Because I'm as lazy about putting on sunscreen as I am about giving vitamins, and we live in CA, I haven't been too worried but really should have just been giving them all along because it can't hurt and might just help.

My nephew is breastfeeding and takes the poly vi sol for vitamin d supplement. We put it in a bottle of breast milk so he just drinks it along with the milk. If taste is a concern, could you put it in the bottle your DH feeds her overnight - I *think* I remember reading somewhere that you were doing this.

I was assigned to do this at our first ped appt. when I balked they explained that it's because they recommend no sun or sunscreen before 6 months. I think it's dumb.

How can breast milk be deficient in something? That makes no evolutionary sense!

That being said, I think dh will make me do it.
I admit, that was my first thought. But hey, if it cannot hurt...if she really hates it I'll switch to the vitamin D stuff only and get her tested for iron at 6 months. I probably will anyway because the issues my sister and I are having with it concern me enough.

Not anymore, but I'll just make him do it anyway. I could sneak it into one of her daily bottles, but I'm not sure if that would have a bad effect on the ability of the milk to stay good? Plus, I don't want to put vgirl through that N will suck down gripe water like its candy...maybe she'll like this? *crossing fingers*

We use Carson Baby D drops. Just one drop on your nipple before feeding once a day and that's it. I was turned off by the smell of the D-Vi-Sol and the fact that it contained artificial color and flavor. Total first time mom paranoia but yeah.

I wish I'd found that! Now we're stuck bc dd loves D-vi-sol. Oh well.

We never did vitamins and I don't ever remember the pediatrician saying anything about them. I'm sure they don't worry too much about vit. D in AZ but I could see iron being an issue (although we started rice cereal around 4 months so maybe that was enough.

Okay...I keep forgetting to give the poly-vi-sol with iron to her, but I finally opened the package tonight and tried a drop of it myself tonight. There are no words to describe how gag-inducingly awful that crap is. And that was one drop. I'll try it tomorrow, but I don't think I can give it to her...it's really that bad.

Yup. It's awful. Which is why I stopped giving it to D. He would gag and vomit. And that was even mixed in 2-4 ounces of breast milk.
