  • I think I'd be up for keeping our next ones rear facing longer than 18 months if they turn out to be smaller kids and we get a new car.

She is going to love the view!
I'm screwed at drive thrus now. Actually, I was already...she recognized them already. And if she heard crinkling...

I was safe at Sonic though, guess not anymore!

      • I think your Ped is confused. There has been an increase in heat deaths since the rear until 2 recs came out, but not due to the babes not getting A/C. People are more likely to forget their kids in the car because they aren't as visible. Do what you're comfortable with, but everything I can find talks about educating parents on ways to remember they have a child in the car, not encouraging forward facing.

        • DD is super crammed in there rear facing. She's 32 inches long and I have to wedge her in there. Plus, the angle of my car door makes it really hard to get her in - I have to lift her, put her in head first and then rotate her body 90 degrees to get her on the seat. All while suspended in mid air.

We will turn her around when the new baby is born (22 months). We can't fit 2 rear facing car seats in the car with DH driving. I would really really love a new car but that doesn't seem to be happening so I guess we are stuck with it.

          • I should have added - all three of my kids were turned around at different ages due to circumstance. DS was somewhere around 18 months because he screamed so much in the car that I rear ended someone. Him forward facing was much safer than me going around causing accidents. DD#2 was rear facing the longest because she was the littlest, had a big head, but honestly mostly because the other two kids could more effectively entertain her when she was facing them! Like any rec, you have to do what works for your situation. I just thought it was interesting what I could find vs what the ped took to be a new guideline.

            • She wasn't saying that the recommendation had anything to do with heat deaths, just that it was worth the potential risk in my situation because we have old cars and she was getting really hot and sweaty in the back because of the seat blocking the A/C that doesn't do so well in the back to begin with. That and she was big enough to be facing forward because of her weight and proportion of her head to her body, which I hadn't thought about.

                • DD will be rear-facing until she's 13 at this rate By weight (and almost height), she still could technically be in her infant carrier!

I always joked that DD2 would have to climb out of her booster seat when we dropped her off to college. She didn't hit 20 lbs. until well after her 2nd birthday and the kid isn't even 100 lbs. at almost 14 y/o. Her noggin wasn't oversized, though. She would have been fine if we'd switched her to front-facing earlier.

                    • It was hard to get ST's tot in my minivan rear facing (luckily she is pretty cooperative). She'll love forward facing!

That's the other problem - her noggin IS oversized I have friends who had to switch their kiddos pretty young because they would use the seat-back as leverage to not sit down. DD does sometimes, but we just deal...

Our 10 month old does this. She's 22 lbs of mad when you put her in her car seat if her siblings aren't also in the car.

My mom just sent me a link the other day telling me I should still be in a booster seat. I think the cutoff is 4'9", and I'm 5'1".
