If the she still fits in the infant seat length- and weight-wise, you could just leave it snapped into the base and put the baby in and out of it as if it were a convertible seat. That could give you time before you have to buy one or both convertible seats.
She does, but barely. DH was actually wrong, she is 17 lbs, not 18 yet. I sort of have to shove her in there and she is definitely starting to show some annoyance at it...who can blame her. I wouldn't want to be shoved in a seat either. I also want to get her into something that gives her a little more space before it starts really heating up in Texas. We both have sedans, so it gets hot in the back now and we have just cracked the 80s. She gets pretty upset when she is overheated...who wouldn't? I'm probably going to have to get one of those carseat fans for at least my car eventually. I hate Texas summers.

Good point on the lighter carseat...luckily we have a Safety 1st seat that I'm not totally in love with in DH's car, but it is light enough for a plane. I ended up buying a Marathon last night for either my car or vgirl's and took my MIL up on her offer to buy another one. She's really good at doing the research, so I'm letting her choose.

So we have 3 carseats down! Now my mom just needs to get one, but luckily she is buying one for herself She see's it as an investment in the multitude of grandchildren she expects. I know we could just switch seats, but with all of the logistics of getting her to different places in 4 different cars, I give up. We've already had 2 car seat incidents and that is enough for me. Once I almost had to drive home an extra 20 miles to get the carrier and another time my mom and I spent 25 minutes in a windy parking lot with the baby screaming trying to switch the base because my husband had put it in so tightly neither of us could get it out!

We have two Britax ones (can't remember which ones though) and took one of them on the plane (two round trips). It was a pain to carry that thing on the plane and off but we got the wheel base for cruising around the airport and that was great.

DD was a chunky baby too but we didn't switch her to a Britax until she was one, when she got tool long for it.

And here we go. She's already up to the last car seat strap on length at 16 weeks. Plus, she's getting too heavy for me to cart around in that thing at 16 lbs (I have short arms!). Tempted by the price of a Safety 1st seat but everyone is saying Britax. Is there a safety/convenience reason?

I went with Britax not knowing about safety reasons, but have been very happy. Fussy asshole kids seem to find them remotely comfortable! Big plus in my book!

The straps on the Britax kind of annoy me but Thirteen just showed me how to make it a little easier. We kind of prefer the Safety 1st in Js car though.

There is a safety issue. Britax meets much tougher European crash standards. If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, Safety 1st is not the first brand I'd consider. I'd look at Evenflo, and then Graco, depending on what fits your vehicle best.
