Convertible Car Seats

Both of my kids went to the Britax Roundabout - R still uses it at 2 1/2, the only reason we took A out of it was because we needed it for R. I think its super easy to move between cars and comfort has never been an issue.

At nearly 3.5 S is still in her Roundabout. I love it and am a bit sad that she is outgrowing it.

Have you considered a Radian? You'd have to be able to try it in your car first, but the expiration is after 8 years, and it could be her last car seat, as they can go up to over 100 pounds. If you have more kids and want to use it, the 8 years may really help, too. We have two Radians (different models), and I really like them both.

This would be a big plus. D seems to still HATE the car with an undying passion. Screams to the point of choking herself for the entire ride any time we go anywhere (up to 2 hours). It's to the point that I'm actually flying with her to NC because we don't believe we can handle the drive from OH to NC - it's a major budget hit for us but I don't think either of us would ever be the same if we drove that long with the screaming.

All this discussion of "seeing if it fits in your car", how do you do that? Do they let you take them outside at BRU?

They should let you take the demo seat out to your car at BRU, or if you are at a boutique baby store. Some BRU even have car seat technicians there some days of the week who can help you. It's actually really important because a great seat might not be great in certain cars - it's all about how the seat and car work together. When DH got rid of his Town and Country minivan, and I got a Honda, the seats that worked best in his van were the worst in mine. We're busy with end of school year activities, but if you let me know when you're going, I might be able to meet you!

This is good to know! We are so slammed right now (graduation this weekend, packing and then moving 10 days later) that I'm not sure it's going to happen before we get to NC. I will keep you posted though, I'd love to see you one more time!

I think it's because the kids are more upright and feel less restricted. I sat in the back seat with dd for an embarrassingly long period of time (2 yo) providing round the clock entertainment so that dh could concentrate on the road without our kid screaming us into a utility pole.

Good luck! They start to be ok with the car seat around 6 months. I remember D's age to be the peak of car seat hatred.

The car seat hatred is actually fairly nuanced (at least for a 16 week old). She does fine in the same exact car seat in the jogging stroller (we run with her daily) but can't deal for more than 3 minutes in the car. I sit back there and sing, make faces, play my iphone for her, etc. but nothing helps. I feel like an idiot puppet back there but I guess I feel better that I'm trying to help...

And yeah, we can wait a few more weeks on the car seat so will probably wait until North Carolina.

TS, that is exactly how DS was!! He loved going on walks with his carseat clicked into the BOB but would purple face, scream the entire time in the car. He got a little better around 5-6 months and then regressed big time when we switched to the Britax convertible. All is good now, though.

Oh, another thing to think about when shopping is how long you'd like your LO to stay rear facing. I'd keep DS rear facing until college if I could, so we picked a car seat with higher rear facing weight and height limits. Just something to consider..

N has done much better in her carseat now that she can play with toys. She does spent 1.5-2 hours in the car with me every day, though, so she has had some practice!

T&S, this is the best carseat toy we ever got. I actually got it because we live in freakin' Texas and my backseat gets hot, but she LOVES staring at it. And when I put it in her reach, she LOVES making it start and stop (It's foam so it cant hurt her). Eats batteries like no other, though.

DH said she played with a (wrapped) CLIF bar that had been in his car for who knows how long yesterday. You do what you gotta do!

You know, that's actually worth a shot because she LOVES our ceiling fan.

Bittersweet - that's identical to DD. Loves the BOB, hates the car, screams to the point of gagging and choking. We basically walk everywhere with her and avoid the car at all costs.

It may be something as subtle as the angle the seat is at while in the car versus the stroller. They are so freakin' finicky and there is no easy way to tell what is overloading their tiny CNS...
