  • Sippy Cups

DS is 13 months this week.
He can drink out of a cup, with assistance, but often makes a huge mess.
We have a few hard-tipped sippy cups, but he won't suck on them. If I take the valve out, he flings water everywhere.

What are some good brands that I could use to transition him into a sippy? It gets complicated when we're out and about and he wants water. He's also struggling with control and independence, and would rather do it himself.

There are several with soft spouts that worked well enough. I just got whatever was cheap at Walmart.

I think I have posted this in the past, but when you are done with the sippy cup, take out the valve and it makes a great martini shaker/strainer!!! (Sippy cups didn't have valves when I used them for my kids).

I just let my kids make a mess with a valve-less sippy cup. I only put a little water (never milk, formula, or juice) in the cup so that the mess is not too bad. Same thing when they transition from the sippy to an open cup. Just a couple sips at a time.

Straw cups (valve cut) to normal cups worked well in our house. Oh and 'Tilty' cups were a really great transition to normal cups.

Oh god, I just read "titty cup."

Dd never got the hang of sippy cups and used Playtex straw cups.

Hang out with more kids that use sippy cups. . Have you tried Nuby and Avent? They have levels of softness and suction. Phedre went straight to the hard spout Playtex at 7 m bc she saw her brothers with them. But with Daegan I bought one of each at the store and tried them all.

I give DD a sippy cup with no valve in it...she totally cried when the cool water hit her the first time (bad mommy!) But, she is slowly getting the fact that stuff comes out the pointy top and not out the bottom. I would say, especially with the weather getting warmer, let him experiment outside or in the kitchen! Have fun
